Shuter Sunset Farms

Shuter Sunset Farms Shuter Sunset Farms is a diversified, 4th generation family farm in Frankton, IN specializing in corn and seed crop soybean production.

We also have a herd of Registered Red Poll cattle that dates back to 1941 and we contract finish hogs. At Shuter Sunset Farms, we are committed to helping to feed the world's population in a sustainable way, starting at our own back door. We utilize minimal tillage options and cover crops in our cropping programs to help conserve our resources, apply our seeds and fertilizers using variable rate t

echnologies to be efficient with our inputs, and do our own spraying of chemicals and spreading of manure to be sure that we only apply that which we need. Most of our corn is marketed through the Poet Ethanol plant in Alexandria or Rydman and Fox Elevator south of the farm and our beans are used by Beck's Hybrids for seed stock, helping to support these local businesses and the jobs that they create close to home. We are active in our local community, serving on various committees and organizations in our church and community including the Lions Club, the local county 4-H and the Frankton Coaches Pitch Baseball League. We are happy to open our farm up and have people out to see the farm and what we do. We have been lucky enough to host a few tours and field days over the years, from Trade delgations from other countries, to Boy Scout Troops, to the Purdue Farm Management Tour. We live and raise our families here on the farm and are proud of the work that we do. We do everything that we can to make sure that we leave the ground that we farm in better condition than when we started farming it, whether that be our own ground or what we manage for our landlords. We want to be a valuable part of our community and provide our kids and grandkids with an opportunity to be a part of our farm someday if they so choose. Our family has been lucky enough to receive numerous agricultural awards including the Outstanding Conservation Farmer in Madision County twice (once by Mervin and once by Mike), been named to the Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame (Mervin), and have been named to the prestigious list of Indiana Master Farmer's by Indiana Prairie Farm (Mike). In addition to our herd of registered Red Poll Cattle, started by Mervin in 1941, Patrick is developing a herd of Simmental and club calf cows under the name of Shuter Show Stock to provide top quality replacements and show animals and Brian is developing a registered Red Angus cowherd under the name Shuter Family Cattle Company. Search for Shuter Show Stock or Shuter Family Cattle Company on facebook to find our pages devoted to those endeavors. We are always looking to find new opportunities to develop relationships with and farm ground for people who believe in what we are trying to do. If you are interested in our cattle, we always have Red Poll bulls, cows and heifers for sale. We also sell top quality, home-raised freezer beef and whole hogs for hog roasts, available seasonally. Here is a picture of Shuter's Dakota at 16 months of age. He is our Junior Herdsire and is a half brother to our bull selling as lot 34 this weekend. Just another example of what our past Herdsire that we owned with the Roederer family, Shuter's Terrain has been doing for us.

Saturday, June 3rd we will be hosting the World Red Poll Tour and having an open house at the farm. The morning will include a stop at the farm and the base of our farming operation. Discussions will center around our cropping program and our focus on improving soil health through everything we do. Planning to visit Smith Family Farms, The Market to get a glimpse into our direct marketing program we are working with the Smith and Marsh families to utilize to market our finished cattle. The afternoon includes a stop at our south farm and the headquarters for our cattle operation. Our multi-generational Red Poll herd will be on display there, as well as the nucleus of our Red Angus program. We will then host an evening meal at the church in Frankton. We invite all Red Poll breeders and anyone interested in the breed, as well as any of our neighbors to join us for the day. Please let me know if you are planning to attend so that we can be sure to have plenty of food. We hope to see you on the 3rd.

Pretty proud of what these two have been able to accomplish this summer. Jacob and Shuter's Brandy have teamed up to win Grand Champion at the AJRPA Summer Preview Show (for the 2nd year in a row), Champion County Raised heifer at our local County 4-H Fair, Champion Red Poll Heifer at the Indiana State Fair 4-H Show and Grand Champion Female at the Indiana State Fair Open Red Poll Show. She was one of the trio of Jacob's Angels this summer, along with a nice pair of Red Angus females.

We think she is as good of a Red Poll Female as we have seen in quite a while and are excited about her future in our herd. We have been working for many years to breed one with this kind of power, mass and dimension, with the bone work to support it and the soundness to carry it, all while maintaining a cool look and Brandy does all that and more. It is just icing on the cake for Jacob to be both breeder and owner on this one. Looking forward to getting her calved out this fall and seeing what the future holds.

Congrats to Garrett Lowes, Dane Miller and LJ Roederer for your successes with Shuter bred cattle at the Indiana State Fair. Garrett showed Shuter's Melissa (Missy) to Champion Red Poll Heifer in the 4-H Show and Grand Champion Female in the Open Show. Dane and Shuter's Sassy were Reserve to Garrett and Melissa in both the 4-H and Open shows. Both of these heifers were sired by MB Globurg. LJ's heifer, Shuter's Steel Magnolia (Maggie) won her class in the competitive Junior Division in the Open Show. Congrats guys.
