I’ve learned alot over the last few years concerning rotational grazing. Timing is everything! Getting on and off of grass is very important. As Big Tom Perkins has said multiple times on his podcast, “graze the tops off to keep the parasite load down” or something like that. I can’t believe how well it works. This set of lambs has not been drenched for parasites at all. The ewes were drenched last Fall.

Not only that, but the moisture retention of the soil is impressive when a canopy is left behind. And the re-growth is so much further ahead.

I think this set of twin ram lambs is a testament to what rotational grazing coupled with genetics is capable of. However the knowledge that is accumulated is probably a never ending story. Every year I find new ways to tweak and improve compared to the last.
This time of year, one of my favorite things to do is walk through the herd out on grass and see the lambs growing from day to day and week to week. I give a fair share of “hat tips” to the ewes that are raising a set like these, while also seeing where the breeding program needs to improve.

I thank the good Lord above that I get to raise my family in the area that we live as well as having the neighbors that we are blessed to be surrounded by.

Big day today weighing lambs for their 60 day weights. Using the shearwell system made it a breeze. First cut of ram lambs today as well. Ended up with 30 head of really nice ram lambs. We will watch how they grow over the next month, weigh then again and refine them at that point.

Call it an education, right of passage or slave labor. Either way it was Tux’s turn to take his maiden voyage. Farming on the 7th day of February. If this is climate change I’ll take it all day long…
