Hello, Hello Canal Market District Friends!! Lou here from Turtle Dove Produce and wanted to let you know that I am scheduled to share music this coming Friday, the 16th!
And the Plus is that my wife's son is visiting from Bolivia...His name is John and he is here with his Bolivian wife, Mabel, and his little daughter Yasu...
Both John and his wife are Musicians and John plays Accordion, Banjo and Guitar. Mabel plays guitar and is also a percussionist and will be playing the Cajon...
So, please feel free to join us from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. this Friday for a Variety of tunes and some will be sung in Spanish!!

Labor Day around the corner...Get together, traveling, Family, Friends, picnics, games, etc., etc.....
Then there's the end of season opportunity for Fresh, Sweet, Ripe n Tasty Watermelon that is Custom picked!!
With Turtle Dove Produce, we have Five different kinds of Watermelon and folks at the Farmers Market ask which one is the sweetest?? First, the melons available, have been proven with growing and harvesting them for about 20 years. So we keeping growing them cuz folks have really liked them year after year...
Now, what does "Custom Picked" mean?? Well, when you get watermelon at the store, they arrive haven been picked whether they are ripe or not because they pick the whole field...Then it's up to the consumer to find a ripe one using various methods...They are Not Custom Picked...
When we check our fields, we pick up the watermelon, big or small, off the ground and thump the melon to listen for the right sound that indicates being ripe. If you leave it on the ground you won't get a true sound of ripeness...then you check the first tendril, pigtail, from the melon stem to see if it's brown or turning brown. If the pigtail tendril is mostly green, you leave it to check later...n some melons have a yellow color where they have been laying on the ground, wherein our Sangria and Jade Star melons turn yellowish giving another witness of being ripe... One more test...you jiggle the attached vine and the melon will give itself to you, like saying, "I am ripe and ready to eat and Enjoy!"
If our watermelons do not pass these tests, we leave them in the field to ripen...
So, looky here! We have another pickup load of Fresh picked Watermelons ready for the Labor Day Holiday!! And there are more to pick...One drawback...looks like we will be Laboring and Celebrate by making folks Happy with Watermelon Sweetness!!

We plan to be at the Canal Market District Farmers Market in Newark, Ohio on Friday, the 4th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Also we are planning to be at Schmidty's, located at SR-16 and SR-146, on Sunday and Monday...

Hello Folks...Good day to ya's!
Here at Turtle Dove Produce, we just did our first serious pick of H2OMelons...Yes, Watermelons!!!
We have Seven different varieties including some red and yellow Seedless...
Our destination is the Canal Market District Farmers Market in Newark, Ohio, tomorrow August 14th...shopping hours from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
So, please check out this video and it explains the varieties we have, plus we explain how we Custom pick our melons so you end up with ripe and Sweet Watermelon...

Believe this video was taken on July 1st or 2nd. It was in the upper 90's and that adds a wet kitchen towel to my attire on top of my head...
Anyway, there is the saying, "Corn, knee high, by the 4th of July", and thankfully we have four types of Sweet Corn growing that's a bit taller than that!!
Keeping it cultivated by hand, patrolling for stalk eating deer at night, live trapping future corn ear eating racoon and hope I find the energy and time to foilage feed with liquid fish emulsion in hopes of making bigger ears...for the corn, not me.....
Trusting we will be stacking fresh ears of Sweet Corn on our Market table at the Canal Market District in two to three weeks! When we say Fresh, that means that we go through the effort to pick it the same day that we provide it for our Market friends and patrons!
Thanks for your patience and our replanted watermelon plants are taking off n growing well...The bees are pollinating the yellow flowers and we already see cute little watermelon fruits!!

Meant to post this earlier, but on June 5th a fierce wind, hail and rain storm swept across the farm...It took down trees on the property and near the house.
Our new greenhouse plastic that we just replaced due to a prior high wind situation seems to have been damaged by the hail. There are two layers of plastic that air is pumped into to create an insulation gap for winter and summer. If the hail pecked little holes on the outer plastic, then the air gap will not be as efficient as it should be.
Otherwise, we sent a fast motion video of the black plastic we put down by hand for watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers and squash. Well...even though it was put on the field sound and secure, the wind ripped it out! Blowing down trees is one thing, but this wind really did unusual damage on the ground level...
Since we had planted a lot of watermelon, cucumber and squash the plastic pulled up and even over the plants. Plus the hail peppered n damaged the plants as well...
Attaching a video of the aftermath and what I had planted to be a second session was now needed to replace our first planting. Plus, even though they were hard to find, we purchased other watermelon and cantaloupe plants...
Yet we are thankful...cuz it seems that down shafts of attempted tornado touchdowns were going on. In the northwest woods, it is obvious that some large maple trees were not just snapped off, but were twisted off!! Then our son noticed that on the southeast side of the house and greenhouses, the tree damage continued. So, again, we are very thankful that whatever it was, it seemed to lift over the house and greenhouses!!
We have finally replanted the five rows of plastic and of course that sets back our timing when our watermelon and cantaloupe will be ripe for the Canal Market District Farmers Market.
Oh well, better to keep plugging along and not just give up.....

At Turtle Dove Produce we have been growing, custom picking and bringing Organically grown Watermelons to the Farmers Markets for some years...
Would anyone at the Canal Market District want us to grow and bring more Watermelons??
Well...first we have to lay plastic by hand. Usually there is an applicator used for this that is attached to a tractor...Since we don't have an applicator, we put down our irrigation drip tube and plastic by hand.....
So we took some time lapse videos. Otherwise it takes about an hour to get one row of tubing and plastic ready for planting ...
It's a physical marathon and we plan on putting in six rows to plant hundreds of plants in about 650+ total feet of rows...
Enjoy the funny little videos and sure wish we could get it done that fast, hypothetically.....

CMD stands for Canal Market District ...n we at Turtle Dove Priduce may have enough flowers to spell out the full name of the Newark Farmers Market but we just used some of our Hanging Baskets to spell out the initials, CMD, in a Colorful way.....
And, of course, 250 is the number of years this nation has endured since it's Independence way back in 1776.....
And what's also Very Important...Mothers Day is just around the corner!! So there's a lot to Celebrate...the Canal Market District Farmers Market just turned 10 years of Newark, Ohio Community Addition last year...the United States is 25 times more in age...annnd Mothers definitely deserve to be Honoured and Celebrated!!!
