In honor of National Forages Week, we planted a field of summer annual forages for our cows. Each year, we have produced an excess of hay, well beyond what our cows need each winter. By converting a field from hay production to summer annuals, the plan is that our cows can graze them during the summer while our cool season pastures get some rest. This was a four-way mix consisting of Short King Sorghum-Sudangrass, Fenugreek, Forage Collards, and Forage Turnip Tops; all from . Being that we A.I. our cows during the early summer for April calving, we wanted to keep this field short in stature (to allow for easy observation of the cows), and to provide them with quality (nutritional) forages to encourage and promote conception; during, what can be, a stressful season of the year.

With rising input costs in agriculture, equipment especially, it is perhaps more important than ever to address maintenance and upgrades on older equipment to ensure their longevity. 'Ol' Henry', our 1960 Ford 641, has dutifully served our farm almost since new; but as of late had been plagued with electrical gremlins that kept him on the sidelines. A 12 volt conversion, electronic ignition, and all associated parts brought simplicity, efficiency, and reliability; and he is now ready for regular work once again. Don't underestimate these old Fords, they're workhorses!

No filters needed on this morning's pictures! We're checking in on our hay fields to see if its dry enough to cut and bale. But after the rains of this past week, it probably needs another day or so to dry the soil out so we don't damage it or the crop through compaction. This field is now 1.5 years post-reseeding and has finally established itself well after some tough, droughty years. This grass/clover hay crop is going to be wet-wrapped as baleage to feed to our cows this winter.

We ran a couple wires of polybraid and let the herd into a temporary paddock to graze some of the extra forage that it had. It didn't take them long to find the random patch of vetch and make quick work of it!

SHOW STEER PROSPECTS!!

We have three steers from this winter/spring group of calves that have some great potential that we would like to offer as show prospects.

Here's how it works:
- The price for each steer is whatever top of market is for their weight class at Muskingum Livestock for the week of/prior to pickup.
- If a buyer would like to register them with a breed registry, we will do our part to assist, but cost and responsibility is on the purchaser.
- Steer must be purchased and picked up within a couple weeks of their weaning date.

That's it. No catches, just a simple transaction and an effort to get young showmen a nice show project, at a fair price, that can be shown all summer at local/regional shows as they are available, and winter jackpot shows across the state and region.

Please watch each video for details on each steer. The first steer (Angus) will be weaned around Memorial Day, while the other two (CharAngus and SimAngus) will be weaned mid-June.
