Because of Covid-19, I have been spending much time pruning in the vineyard. Sue has been suffering from Arthritis but keeps me fed so I can continue cleaning up the vines and getting them prepared for hopefully a successful 2020 season. It is quite a delight to be outside enjoying the return of wildlife after a long winters nap. I hope all is well with everyone and am looking forward to a great summer.

We survived the summer of 2018 but the vines were not happy this year. We went from 20,000 pounds last year to 500 pounds this year. The reason is not certain but all indications are that mother nature decided to hammer down on temperature and delayed spring causing damage to the buds. We continued with our normal attention to maintaining the vines feeding nutrition and keeping disease at bay and ended the summer with the vines looking very healthy and hopefully productive next season.

Well we finished hedging the north vineyard this weekend. Next weekend we plan on netting the north vineyard and some of the south.

We finished this years pruning on Sunday at 2:44 p.m. with a great sigh of relief and a celebratory beer(s). Thanks to all who helped this year to get us done in record time due to very foul spring weather. Yesterday (Monday) was spent doing our fall spray program because of the rapid switch from fall to winter. We notice buds now beginning to swell in anticipation of new shoots and a busy summer of maintenance.

UPDATE:
The weather in March and April was horrible for pruning vines due to severe cold (four weekends below freezing) and much snow. We began serious pruning the third week of April and since then the temperature is typically 70-80 for highs which trigger the vines to begin their Spring revival. We are frantically trying to beat bud break and hopefully will finish this coming weekend. We now know that we have suffered some bud damage from the winter (6 nites at 25 below zero) and will not likely repeat the great havest of 2017 but still look to a good fall harvest. mkj
