Muttyboots Farms

Muttyboots Farms Purveyors of naturally grown farm products. We have decided to use the Freedom Ranger for Meat birds.

They were developed in the 60's by the French government for their Free Range
program. (no, they do not peep in french) They are very active foragers,
which makes them ideal for the pastured poultry model. Because of this active
foraging, the meat is more healthy then your average grocery store chicken
(i.e. cornish cross), which are typically grown in a confined animal operation.

Warning, this is not for the weak stomach..but what else are we gonna do after a beautiful Thanksgiving? Muttyboots Farm has been silent, but busy. Our project has been the Blue Foot Chicken. This isn't your typical chicken...at all. We've had several, and the taste is so different...almost like duck....great with a pinot noir...these are going down with us to the Northern Neck of VA to share with dear friends. They've had a diet of corn, milk products and oats for the last 2 weeks. Will we sell them at some point? yes, but we need to get them to perfection....more chicken...more wine...:)

Our latest adventure is making lard soap from our beautiful pigs last summer. If you have been following this post, you will know they were happy, healthy pigs, eating lots of grass and veggies. This one soap looks yummy doesn't it. It's REALLY soap! Lard, coconut oil, and sandlewood oil. To get the black, I pulled some mix out, added charcoal (purchased from Common Market) and put on top at the end. The others are lard with olive oil, then I added some lavender. Smells heavenly!!! These will be for sale after curing time, in about 4 weeks. I'll let you know how/ where then. :)

We are pretty sure Spring is here to stay. We managed to plant over 300 potato seeds today, Red Pontiacs, Gold Yukons and Kennebecs. Check out the soil we dug up! Beautiful, rich, plenty of earth worms, which is a good thing! This land has not had any pesticides or any sort of sprays applied for 2 1/2 years!...This is the good stuff!! Potatoes will be ready in August. Whewhoo!

Soooo, if anyone saw the piggie on the edge of Route 15 north, yep, that's our girl. We had some scary moments this morning, but I think the tractor trailer that flew by scared her into sumbission. Whew.....
