When you raise them right there is no extra seasoning or Marinades. All that’s needed is a good fire and smoke.

A great read bringing awareness to mental health in the farming industry.

Too few mental health providers understand farming culture.

It’s always been a yearly tradition to make freezer corn for the winter months until next years sweet corn crop.

It’s become a tradition of cousins, friends, and family members getting together sweating and laughing together over the hot corn and fire.

It wasn’t the same this year without the contagious laugh that Bill had. He was a huge driving force behind making sure the water was ready and keeping the fire going.

Prayers and thoughts are with those who are in these areas. This year has been a great struggle for some.

UPDATE -- I wanted to share a map of the counties that are in the "Disaster" Area from the USDA, and also include the neighboring counties that are not officially in a disaster area, but can still apply for federal help. The USDA has declared this disaster due to the 8 weeks of severe drought in the red shaded counties.

Other areas may have issues, but these highlighted counties have experienced the worst of it over the last 8 weeks. At the end of May, there were no drought conditions in the Buckeye State, so things have really changed in the last 3 or so months. The deadline to apply through the FSA is April 28, 2025. - 3:02 PM 9/4/24

Hay season-
May your equipment keep running & all the tires hold air.
May the snacks stay plentiful & the allergy medicine potent.
May the windrows be large & the weather stay dry.
May we take a moment to appreciate the smell of fresh cut hay & the sight of full barns.
May the knotters work correctly & the knives stay sharp.
May the breakdowns be short & tempers be cool.
May we remember the rest will come
&
May we all still like each other at the end of this hectic season. -Love Kam

There were questions about how the dairy industry has changed. Even though we don’t milk a herd anymore it’s fun following along and seeing how much the industry has changed and improved.

IowaDairyFarmer does a great job explaining some of the improvements and management that this creamery does.

A very short read, but a spot on read.

As we end Mental Health Awareness Month, here are three considerations to keep in mind when helping yourself or others through this pain.

The weeks have gotten busy. Planting on between rain fall. Fixing machinery. Chopping triticale that will feed cattle this winter. Prepping ground for more planting. Days no longer end at 8pm, but instead 11pm if we’re lucky.

Spring and Summer days on the farm aren’t for the faint of heart.

Tell me it’s hay season without telling me it’s hay season.

Isolated thunderstorms anyone?

That sigh of relief as it passes north.
