Fields Without Fences

Fields Without Fences Forest Garden Farm & Permaculture Design. Perennial polycultures, medicinal berries & herbs, wild edibles, farming inspired by nature, agroecology consulting.

On our farm, located within the Delaware River watershed, we cultivate fruits, nuts, medicinal herbs, and wild edibles within naturalized plantings that are inspired by the wild ecology. Through site specific design, we integrate approaches found in environmental restoration, permaculture design, and regenerative agriculture to create low input, self-renewing, agroecological systems that naturally

restore health and integrity to our shared landscape. Beyond our fields, we bring these practices to our consulting and design work with farmers, landowners, and organizations. Inspired by a philosophy that recognizes all elements are integral to an interconnected planet, we approach landscapes as interdependent ecosystems, out of which the well being of all is reflected in the health and functionality of the whole. We bring this mindful holistic approach to everything we do, from the products we craft, to the programs and services we offer.

It’s a trope and it also happens to be true ☺️ I have to share the sincere gratitude we feel for all our Elderberry Elixir customers and enthusiasts…

It’s been three years now since we launched our reformulated Certified Organic Elderberry Elixir. I remember standing in our kitchen, nine months pregnant, cooking up the recipe we would soon send out for a Standard Process. Which is to say, this whole timeline and project has taken shape alongside a growing child. And the child has happily gotten the most of it. Of course there have been big promotional pushes and flurries of activity on the farm, but there have also been long absences from public events, farm tours, and a decidedly on-again off-again relationship with our newsletter.

So when an online order comes in, or a wholesale account calls for a re-stock, I am sincerely grateful that somehow, by a thousand miracles, our Elderberry Elixir has found it’s way to so many shelves and homes. Thank you to everyone that has supported us along the way with your purchases, reviews, and local word of mouth recommendations. It really does matter. We put our heart and soul into this product and send it out into the world.

Thank you for receiving it ❤️

Now that we’ve tipped the scales into autumn, it’s about time I got around to posting some photos of summer…

Less than ample photographic evidence to the contrary, I assure you that we were in full attendance for it. Fully present for all the rising full moons and fragrant herbs in the garden at high noon. Present to peel most of the fruit off the trees and shrubs in the fields, and keen to the wild fauna that picked up where we left off. Work and responsibilities were thick, but on the weekends we were committed to strolling the festivals in town, and joyfully tumbling in the deep blue and white foam breakers on the coast. Pretty certain we saw nearly every one somewhere along the way.

I find that when I try to grab summer by the fistful, my hands are leaky like a sieve. The abundance is mostly too profuse and kinetic to catch, but along the way I did manage to net a few fish to share...

1. The kitchen garden in high summer

2. Fist full of blackberries

3. Brown eyed susan solar eclipses

4. Remembered to prune the peach trees on the farm, and was rewarded with a bumper crop - then promptly forgot to thin the peach trees during fruit set, and lost a few heavy bearing branches to snapping. Made a note, “you win some, you lose some”

5. Chestnuts vying for real estate in the canopy layer of the forest garden fields at the old farm

6. Joe pye and rattlesnake master in the meadows at the old farm

7. Discovered an ancient and long dormant homestead pear tree fruiting again for the first time in years! Made a note, “miracles happen”

8. Bumble bee about the Great Blue Lobelia

9. Various bird infrastructure

10. Pawpaws playing coy

Elderberry harvest season underway at fields without fences! 🌞

Fields Without Fences Elderberry Elixir is crafted using hand-harvested organic elderberries at peak ripeness, steeped with organic spices in wildflower honey, and finished with a touch of lemon juice. The result is a sweet natural remedy that’s both powerful and gentle.

What sets our elixir apart? We never dilute it. Each 8 oz bottle contains nearly two pounds of fresh-frozen elderberries, making it one of the most concentrated formulas on the market. This commitment to quality is why customers return, and why many families say their kids won’t settle for anything else.

Elderberry has long been celebrated for its ability to support immune health, and today, it’s embraced by wellness seekers looking for effective, natural botanicals. Backed by research, elderberries are rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds that reduce oxidative stress and support health and wellness.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, I just work here… Admiring these regal beauties as they soak in the summer sun.

As the white blooms of the elderberry swell into green berries on their path to deep purple, we can observe an aspect of their medicine taking form.

The berries produce pigment as they ripen in the sun, and this enzymatic process is what creates the highly antioxidant flavonoids found in dark berries.

Elderberries, dark as they are, contain some of the highest antioxidant and anti inflammatory concentrations of flavonoids found in fruit.

When they reach full maturity their dark royal purple berries weight their once upward crowns downward. Ripe for the picking, but not for the eating! While elderberries should not be consumed raw, they make a gentle but powerful superfood syrup for health and wellness.

Check out our Elderberry Elixir available for purchase online and in local shops and markets!

We appreciate your support 🌞🙏

Certainly grateful for a little sun, but the steady rain this season did present a great opportunity to observe water flow patterns on the farm.

On a rainy day this spring, Johann had the opportunity to describe the design, and observe the implementation of the water management system at with participants of Highlands Sustainable Ag Grant program.

Understanding and working with (not against) water patterns in the landscape is foundational to sustainable agriculture. It allows us opportunities to optimize field access and management; capture water during major rain events; and preserve soil integrity.

How do we do it all? We don’t.

Was up at BIRD, the original farm harvesting a wholesale order the other day, and had trouble seeing the hoop house through the forest garden…

Thank goodness nature generally rewards an abdication of control.

After all, if every patch of earth were meticulously managed, how would we ever encounter new fruits and flowers where we never dreamed them?

The saving grace of having only two hands and a few finite hours in a day to actively apply one’s wishes - is that the field of being is always alive with possibilities.
