End of the laying season Marans grades: the eggs have lightened up a few shades but the ink is still going strong. One of the things I am continuously breeding for is color that fades as little as possible throughout the year. A little progress at a time.

We are still looking for forever homes for these two foster puppies. They are chihuahua mixes, both girls, one brown and one black. Both are super sweet. They have been vet checked, have had their first 2 rounds of shots, been dewormed, and are on hard food. They will be small dogs. They currently each weigh just under 3lbs. Asking $50 each rehoming fee. These are the puppies we found dumped in a shopping cart at Petsmart. We bottle fed them and have been fostering them out of our own pockets. We want them to go to good homes. We are willing to pay for spaying for both puppies through the SPCA or the HOPE Foundation when they are big enough. Although they are old enough, they don't quite meet the weight requirements for spaying yet. Please share and find these babies good homes.

I think he's getting use to this life.

Flynn is doing well with his training. The "mounting everything in sight" calmed down quite a bit after his neutering. Plus, he tried to mount his dad and daddy put him in his place right quick. Nothing works as well as parental discipline. He now knows all basic commands (sit, down, stay, wait, and get the hell back inside the house). Getting there!

Update on the two puppies rescued from a shopping cart, please share:

These two little girls are ready for their forever homes. They turned 9 weeks old yesterday. Unfortunately, they are still too small to spay at this time. Each pup only weighs 2lbs. That being said, we are offering to pay for both girls to be spayed through the HOPE Foundation or the SPCA when they are big enough (3lbs or 4 months old). Any adopter will be required to sign a contract stating the puppies will be spayed before they are 6 months old.

We believe they will be small dogs as adults as they look to be chihuahua mixes. The black one is very calm and a little shy. She would work well in a calm, low energy household. The brown one is spunky and medium energy. She would work well in a family who can give her some good playtime. Both have been socialized with adults, children, and other dogs. They would work better as indoor dogs because they are so small. They are super sweet and love cuddles. Please consider giving these lovely ladies a good home.

In the next month, we will be clearing out most of our growouts, as well as a number of older laying birds. My schedule has been overwhelming this year and something has got to give. So, we've made the difficult decision to eliminate almost half of our breeding birds. That means we will not be keeping a lot of the growouts I had planned to keep. We have already cut down our breeder birds substantially this past year, we will continue to do so through the fall. That means that we will no longer be carrying some of our breeds come next season so these growouts may be the last of some breeds. Leaving the farm this next season are: Whiting True Blues, 55 Flowery Hens, Sex-linked BC1, white skinned Hmong, the Ellison Chocolate Egger, and an EE pen. I really just had to look at all the pens and asked myself, "Do the birds in this pen bring me joy or are they really just for others?" The truth is, although I love all the beautiful egg colors, my real passion lies in the breeding of the birds. Some of my favorite chickens (Liege Fighters, Gigantes, and the Hmong Blue Skins) lay the most boring eggs. But, I enjoy them nonetheless. Moving forward, I will be breeding small, tight pens as I have been doing with my project varieties. All remaining breeds will be cut down to smaller, more manageable pens. This means colored layers will be in short supply from here on out.

As many of you know, I lost almost all of my Ellison Chocolate Egger hens and a large number of Hmong Blue Skin hens due to some unfortunate accidents. Although I was lucky enough to have another pen of Hmong Blue Skins, I did not have extra Ellison Chocolate Eggers. It took me over 6 generations of breeding to achieve the Chocolate Egger and had to maintain two separately bred lines in order to create the sex-lined 7th generation and keep them consistent. My next step was to stabilize the line using the birds I lost. I no longer have the birds to recreate them and no longer have the will, time, or space to go through it all again. I've moved on other, more interesting endeavors, like the Blue-Skinned Naked Neck Polaco Gigante. I mean, is that even a competition?

55 Flowery Hen Flock Available: I have a flock of 2 roosters and 10 hens/pullets available. All hens/pullets are laying. There are both silver and gold varieties in the flock. At full maturity, the hens will lay extra-large white to off-white eggs. This breed is autosexing with easy differentiation between male and female at hatch. They are one of the most beautiful birds on the farm. However, they can be somewhat flighty. They are not lap birds.

Also available is a quad of Whiting True Blues. One rooster (splash laced red) and 3 hens: black, brown-red, and blue wheaten. All are 2 years old except the brown-red who was hatched last year.

We will never get rid of our Marans. 😁

$800 dollars later, Flynn got a clean bill of health from our vet, is up to date on all shots, dewormed, clear of heartworm, has his neuter appointment scheduled, and getting use to his surroundings. So far, he's been great with the kids, foster puppies, his parents, and kind of just ignores the cat and chickens. He's had very little training but he is a very quick study. His favorite thing is currently pup cups from Starbucks!

Through no fault of his own, this young boy will tentatively be available for adoption. Flynn is a blue merle Australian Shepherd and will be 2 years old in October. He is one of our puppies from Lucky and Shadow's last litter. He is eligible for dual AKC/ASCA registration. Please let us know if you'd be interested in giving this beautiful boy a good home.

There is a caveat. He will not be available right away and we will be picky about his new home. He will be staying with us for a bit for thorough vetting. Because we did not raise him, we absolutely want to spend some time with him to confirm what type of owner he would do best with. He currently resides in a family with children. We have yet to produce a puppy from this pairing that has not turned into a great family dog. He will get a full workup from our vet, be neutered, updated shots, and we will begin basic training with him. Anyone interested is free to contact me and we can start that conversation.

Also, the two little puppies we rescued from the shopping cart have a clean bill of health, are flea free, and are now 5 weeks old. They will also be available for adoption in 3 weeks. We believe they will be small-medium sized dog as they have remained tiny, just over 2 lbs each at 5 weeks old. They are rambunctious little ladies. They will come with their first round of shots, deworming, and we are also willing to cover the cost of spay in the future for both puppies.
