Fresno Pacific University Alumni thank you for sharing our story. We hope many more will start their conversation today
Enduring the unimaginable—loosing two children to su***de—Cynthia Smith (BA ’20) (pictured on left) has fought through the tragedy and now helps promote su***de prevention through her signature BBQ sauce: Smitty’s Secret Sauce. It’s been a difficult journey for Cynthia and her oldest daughter Cameia Richardson (BA ’20) (pictured on right), but both benefited from their time earning bachelor’s degrees in social work at FPU’s North Fresno campus. You will be able to read more of their story in this fall’s issue of Pacific magazine coming out in early November.
As a clinical social worker now, Cynthia made her BBQ sauce as a way to start a conversation and prevent su***de. She prays over each bottle and encourages those who buy a bottle to share the su***de prevention message and start a conversation. It can save a life. Proceeds from each sale of Smitty Secret Sauce are donated to the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).
And did you know that September is National Su***de Prevention Month? Nearly 800,000 people die by su***de in world each year which translates to roughly one death every 40 seconds. Su***de is the 2nd leading cause of death in the world for those aged 15-24 years, but there is help. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call 988 or text 988 immediately. You can also chat online at 988lifeline.org.
Thanks for sharing your story, Cynthia. Way to go! Smitty's Secret Sauce Fresno Pacific University NAMI Fresno
