Seagate Farm

Seagate Farm We're a fruit orchard and farm that follows organic principles and practices on San Juan Island, Wa Seagate in Brooklyn, New York is a real place.

Seagate Farm’s primary crop is heirloom apples for hard cider producers. Ben’s mother always described it as an idyllic beach village where she grew up with her brothers and dozens of cousins. It always sounded like a mythical utopia to us, so we thought it would be both inspirational and a wonderful way to honor her life by naming our farm after Harriet’s happy place. We chose San Juan Island in

Washington state to be closer to Ben’s family. Because we both love hard cider, It’s also the ideal place to grow apples that make hard cider due to it being the same climate as traditional and heirloom cider apples from England and France. Heirloom apples, those grown in the San Juan area for over 100 years, are becoming harder to find so it was the perfect place to grow the hard-to-find varieties of hard cider apples. Seagate Farm includes a variety of heirloom fruits, trees, vegetables, and cover crops following organic principles to benefit the environment, increase biodiversity, improve soil health, clean water, beneficial insects, and important organisms. We do this by using the Swiss Sandwich Method that incorporates low-density orchard rows which are alternated with a variety of cover crops. Mason bees and bumblebees are included for natural cross pollinating the trees and crops. We will have chickens to not only produce fresh and local eggs, but they’re also great for pest control and naturally fertilizing the soil. In addition, Seagate rents our large pasture for temporary livestock grazing to naturally mow the native grasses and to make natural compost that is used for the numerous crops. Along the eastern edge of our farm, we have setbacks for the designated wetlands and pond so the natural areas and ecosystems are not only preserved, but available for the abundant wildlife and natural beauty. To also help the environment and decrease our carbon footprint, we reclaim rainwater, have created a second pond for water storage, and utilize solar power for most of the farm’s needs. Although running a natural and holistic farm can be more time consuming, we feel it is the only way to leave the earth better than the way we found it. What better way to help our community become stronger while giving back with care, equity, and love. Doing what is best for our neighbors is just the right thing to do.

435 Trees... Seagate Farm now has 435 fruit trees! We just added a few more apple trees in the orchard in addition to the many other apple, pear, and stone fruit trees. We even had some help (thank you Eve!) with the last few Dabinett trees.

The Dabinett cider apple originates from the traditional cider region of Somerset, England, in the mid-19th century. It’s a classic English hard cider apple variety which produces a full bittersweet juice. Unlike many hard cider varieties which are best used for blended ciders, Dabinett can also be used to produce a single varietal full-bodied medium-dry cider. You won’t find these apples in the grocery store because the Dabinett is not good for eating but they make wonderful juice for hard cider.

5 years of Seagate Farm!
5 years ago today, we founded Seagate Farm on wonderful San Juan Island. We bought raw land and installed all the needed infrastructure – electricity, irrigation, and 400+ apple and pear trees to make it a working farm. Our latest addition is the barn that is currently under construction. When finished, the barn will be ~2,500 sq ft and used to store all of the harvested fruit before it’s sold. HUGE and HEARTFELT thank yous to everyone who has helped make the farm a success! Stay tuned to on our website’s blog at www.seagatefarm.com and on Instagram and Threads Seagate Farm.

First Harvest...
The young trees that we planted three years ago are being harvested for the first time! We’re so excited to see the new trees thriving – and to sell the apples. The apple varieties shown are Kingston Black, Chisel Jersey, Liberty, Hewe’s Virginia crabapple, and Cosmic Crisp. Next week, the Dabinett and Brown Snout trees should be ready to harvest. You can get information on these and our many other varieties on our website at https://www.seagatefarm.com/products

Barn Foundation

Our barn construction is really coming along with the pouring of the new slab! We’re so excited to be adding this vital piece of infrastructure to the farm. Now they’ll start to frame the walls so there will be lots of activity at the construction site. You can also on our website’s blog at www.SeagateFarm.com and on Instagram and Threads to see the barn’s progress.

Barn Construction...
Our contractor’s crew recently started grading for the farm’s new barn so we’re under way! Construction should take about eight months to complete. It will make a big difference when we can sort, package, and store all the organic apples we’re growing to sell. The first pic shows the crew starting the earth work and the diagram is roughly what the barn will look like when finished. Be sure to follow our website’s blog at www.seagatefarm.com or on Instagram and Threads to see the barn’s progress.

It’s not brand new, but the tractor is new for us at the farm! It will be a big help with the fruit harvests, daily chores, projects, and things that always seem to come up.

Grafted Trees...

We just planted 14 new grafted fruit trees (eight crabapples and six pear trees) in the orchard. A big thank you to Madrona Murphy of Kwiaht who skillfully grafted the fruit tree’s scion wood onto rootstock for us!

As part of Kwiaht's crabapple research on local apple varieties in the San Juan Archipelago, they’ve come across numerous examples of naturally occurring hybrids between native Pacific crabapple (Malus fusca) and various orchard apples, including heritage varieties. Our eight new crabapple trees, currently called AKWI-001 until there’s a better name, are a hybrid of native Malus fusca and Yellow Bellflower. These hybrids are larger than their wild cousins, but retain some of the wild flavor (high acid content, including citric acid, and sometimes high tannins).

Each of the six pear grafts are different pear varieties and all of them have high tannin levels (which provides 'body' to fermented drinks) and will make great perry cider. We can’t wait until we get to taste all of this organic and locally grown fruit in cider and perry!

Plum Power...
The apples may just be starting to wake up, but this Satsuma Plum is blooming like crazy. This plum tree was planted in 2023 and is really taking off. A handful of stone fruit trees were planted that year to see how they’d do next to the apple orchard. We can’t wait until it starts producing some of our organic plums!

The Satsuma plum is an heirloom that was introduced from Japan in the late 1800's. These plums, often called the "blood plum," have deep red flesh and an excellent tart flavor. They’re so good that you can eat them right off the tree and also wonderful for canning, baking, and cooking.
