Lopez Village Farm, run by Darren and John, produces an impressive variety of vegetables from a small footprint. Every crop is grown using biointensive practices that prioritize healthy soil, hand cultivation, and chemical-free growing. Their philosophy is simple: when you care for the earth, it gives back in the form of flavorful, nourishing food.

Growing in their farm, you'll find culinary favorites alongside unique vegetables that encourage cooks to try something new. Every harvest reflects the same patience and attention to detail that built the farm from the ground up.

Through the San Juan Islands Food Hub, Lopez Village Farm's harvest reaches neighbors on other islands.

This week, try shiso, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, shish*to peppers, rozette potatoes and more from Lopez Village Farm. Every order supports a small farm dedicated to caring for the land, strengthening the local food system, and growing vegetables with intention.

Meet the Producer: Saturn's Return Far

On San Juan Island, Emma and Wiley are building something that feels both ambitious and deeply rooted. Now in their fourth season, the couple—along with their baby—are stewarding 42 acres into a thriving mosaic of agriculture, habitat, and community.

The farm is home to an inn serving farm-fresh breakfasts, a bustling farmstand, and beautiful rows of vegetables surrounded by forest. Beyond the fields, they're planting hundreds of fruit and nut trees, raising pasture-fed hens, and restoring wetlands and habitat to create an increasingly abundant landscape.

Using exclusively organic and regenerative practices, Saturn's Return has established permanent no-till beds that produce uniquely flavorful, open-pollinated varieties adapted to the Pacific Northwest.

Each week, a generous harvest makes its way to the San Juan Islands Food Hub. Right now, you'll find crisp lettuce heads and salad mixes, cabbage, fava beans (in-shell and shelled), edible flowers, and other seasonal vegetables. In addition to produce, the farm stand, open Friday through Sunday, contains crafted goods from around the island, including calendula cream, lemon balm vinegar, native plant tea towels, za'atar seasoning, lamb sausages, and more.

How far did your meal travel to reach your plate?

Food in the industrial agriculture system often travels 1,500 miles or more before it reaches your fork. The result isn't just a less flavorful strawberry—it's more transportation, packaging, refrigeration, and a food system that's less connected to the communities it serves.

Choosing food grown in the San Juan Islands keeps food miles low while supporting a stronger food system. While food miles aren't the only measure of sustainability, buying closer to home reduces the resources needed to get food to your table while keeping more of your food dollars with local farmers, fishers, ranchers, and food producers.

Because local food doesn't have to endure long-distance shipping, it can be harvested or caught closer to its peak, delivering exceptional flavor, freshness, and quality.

The San Juan Islands Food Hub makes shopping local easy. Browse seasonal produce, island-raised meats, locally caught seafood, artisan foods, and pantry staples from local producers—all in one convenient online marketplace.

An absolute favorite of kids and adults everywhere, sugar snap peas have arrived! Try them this week from Aurora Farms or (before they sell out!). Thanks for the lovely pic!

The cool maritime climate of the Islands creates ideal growing conditions for these sweet, crisp treats. Long daylight hours and mild spring temperatures allow peas to mature slowly, developing exceptional sweetness and tender texture.

Fresh-picked sugar snaps are delicious eaten right out of the bag, tossed into salads, lightly sautéed in stir-fries, or added to pasta dishes.

Find fresh sugar snap peas from island growers on the San Juan Food Hub while the season lasts. Peas are a highly nutritious summer must have.
