Mantodea Farm

Mantodea Farm Take everything in stride… Pronunciation: man-TOE-dee-ah

With its large eyes and swiveling head, the mantid entertains and fascinates us.

Most people call members of the suborder Mantodea praying mantises, referring to their prayer-like posture when sitting. Mantis is a Greek word meaning prophet or soothsayer. The mantis comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives. Usually the mantis makes an appearance when we've flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small

voice within us because of the external din we've created. It was here, at what was Busy B Farm, where we saw these fascinating creatures, the praying mantis on every visit. It seemed to be a sign of good fortune and represented the peace, calm, and magic that we were looking for in our lives.

Our first 2026 calf!

So pleased with this gorgeous HighPark bull calf, his cute lil ears are literally silver.

“Spice Girl” his dam, a heifer, is being a fabulous momma. She is a very nice mid-sized HighPark, probably one of our very favorite gals. So we have been anxiously awaiting for this cross!

Sire is “HMH Summer Ino”, a 37.5” tall HighPark, C+, a super stout mini bull.

This bull looks pretty leggy so will be fun to watch him grow!

We do a little of everything here at Mantodea…we are located right near great off-roading trails - beautiful morning for this group of guys and gal to go for a ride in the beautiful forests of the Shenandoah Valley. Camping last night in tents was likely a little chilly - tonight we will have to get the fire going while we eat some farm-to-table boer and other good food.

“Morning Rounds”

3/30/26

This morning’s pack walk felt like stepping into our own little storybook here at Mantodea Farm.

Five dogs, two cats who insist they’re dogs, Wilbur practicing his cattle diplomacy with “River” and the tree‑top feline lookouts keeping watch like they had important intel to report.

Across the river, the neighbor Angus stared at us like we were some sort of traveling circus. 🤷🏼‍♀️ “Suzie”, of course, struck a pose from her field like she’d been waiting for an audience.

And then—my favorite part—tucked along the riverbank, a quiet patch of daffodils smiling up from their hiding place. A tiny bit of spring magic just waiting for us to wander by. 🌼

The moon was bright enough tonight to pretend it was daytime, so the dogs and the two “honorary dog” kitties insisted on a field adventure. Subtle was… not the vibe. Rustling, trotting, chirping, zooming — the whole crew announcing themselves to the night.

But in between the chaos, the horses stood along the fence like quiet sentinels. Every so often, a pair of ears would rise into the moonlight — just a silhouette, just enough mystery to make the whole field feel enchanted.

Mantodea nights always find their own kind of magic, even when the soundtrack is anything but peaceful.

Enjoying this gorgeous day on the farm. Stopping and capturing pics, something I haven’t done enough of in a while. 💕
