Customer: “Can you make an R2-D2 cake?”
Me: “Yes Sir, I can.”
Customer: “But, can you actually make it 3D? Like the REAL R2-D2?”
Me: “Yes Sir, I can do that with no problem.”
Customer: “Can you REALLY? Like, actually make it standing up on its legs and everything?”
Me: “Yes Sir, I would just need to build the appropriate inner-structure. But, I can do that with no problem.”
Customer: “CAN YOU REALLY?! And, could you even put a little blue light, like a real light where it’s supposed to go?”
Me: “Yes Sir, I can do that too.”
Customer: “Wow! YOU CAN REALLY do all that!?”
Me: “Yes Sir, definitely.”
Then I gave him the quote…
Customer: (total and complete silence….)
I didn’t know whether he was having a heart attack, or whether he had hung up on me. I said, “Hello?”. The excitement was completely gone from his voice. This real life conversation ended up in a sheet cake order with an R2-D2 edible image. My friends, my Cake Artist friends… You and I KNOW that YES WE CAN! They want a 3D standing R2-D2 cake? Yes we can do it! They want a giant Orangutan cake? Yes we can do it! They want a 5 ft. tall replica cake of their nephew? Yes we can do it! They want a giant octopus cake? YES WE CAN do it! Guys, it’s not a matter of CAN WE? It’s a matter of CAN THEY?! CAN THEY ORDER?? CAN THEY? It’s not that we “don’t want” to do it. We want to do it! But, CAN THEY order? Can they afford it? Do they WANT to pay for all of that work? If the answer is NO, why in the world would you donate your time, hard work, and talent just to make somebody happy? This was a real life conversation. I’ve had many like these over the years. All of these were real cake requests. Remember that YOU are the Cake Artist. ONLY YOU KNOW all of the time and hard work involved in making these types of cakes. Stick to your guns my friends and remember that YOU ARE NOT WALMART! Value your time and hard work. Honor your gift!

We’re all susceptible to getting upset when we have negative comments directed towards us as a person, our business, and our custom cakes. If you’ve been in business even a short while, it’s happened. It will always happen. But, how much it upsets you and for how long is up to YOU. Your words should carry more weight in your life than anyone else’s words. What YOU say about yourself, your work, and your business is MORE important than what anyone else says. That’s why you shouldn’t get TOO upset about what others say. Of course what they’ve said isn’t pleasant, but their words don’t carry the authority and weight in your life that yours do. The BIG danger is if they said something ugly and then YOU believed it about yourself and your business. That’s when you’ll have a problem on your hands (especially if YOU are saying it about yourself). You have the power to create the business you want by choosing your customers (and peers) wisely. If you’ve had a bad experience with a customer in the past, look back and carefully recall if there were any red flags you ignored. If there was, let that serve as a lesson learned and put it in your “experience toolbox” so that next time you can “kindly pass” on someone that gives you the same red flag. It’s also smart to think back and see if there’s something you should’ve done differently to avoid the problem. The best advice I can give you is when someone tries to hurt you or your business, immediately forgive. I know it’s not easy, but you can do it. You also need to stop talking about it. When you gossip about it or just tell someone about it, you’re keeping it alive. Forgive, brush it off, remind yourself of WHO you are, and also remember that you can’t please everyone. That’s just life and accepting that is a sign of maturity. If you own a cake or cake topper business like I do, remember that you can and should always pray and ask God to SEND you the RIGHT customers. He can and He will. All we need to do is ask. 💕

We MUST remember this! Constantly remind yourself of this. As Cake Artists and business owners, if we are to be successful, we MUST develop a thick skin. We have to toughen up, pull our thumbs out of our mouths and grow up! Don’t get your feelings hurt. Don’t feel bad or immediately start looking at yourself or doubting your decisions. If you know you are charging correctly for your hard work then STICK TO YOUR GUNS! Be true to yourself, to your artistic talent, and to the gift that God gave you. The right customers will always find you. Remember, you are NOT Walmart. Your work is NOT for everybody. Artistic custom cakes are a LUXURY. They are not a necessity. A “necessary cake” is Walmart, Costco, Sam’s, or a walk-in bakery. That’s NOT you. Never has been, never will be. After you put in a lot of effort into providing a quote and you don’t get ANY type of response, not even a “Thank you for your time”, do NOT feel bad. That is NOT a reflection of you. That’s a reflection of THEM. That just means that person doesn’t have any manners. Now WHY in the world would you want someone like that as a customer? High quality work has its own way of weeding out the wrong customers. Just move on and get ready for the RIGHT customer to come along. Trust God always and thank Him in advance for sending you the right customers. If He does it for ME, He WILL do it for you! ♥️💪🏻
