The Canteen offers fresh and frozen protein, cleaning supplies, and paper products in bulk for sale through our Sysco partner to members of the community as part of a once-per-week, all online ordering, curbside no-touch pickup operation that meets current North Carolina and Federal health and safety guidelines related to COVID-19.
All proceeds go towards the American Legion mission of supporting veterans and our community in Southern Wake County.
American Legion Post 116 is a 501(c)19 veterans service organization located at 6400 Johnson Pond Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC and is the sponsoring organization for the Canteen. Post 116 is the State of North Carolina’s largest American Legion Post with nearly 1,000 members. Under normal conditions, Post 116 is licensed to operate an onsite bar with prepared foods and a separate rented meeting space, known as the “Rec Room.” The Rec Room is not a part of Canteen operations at this time.
Why are we providing curbside pickup of protein, cleaning supplies and paper products?
If you have been to a grocery store lately, then you know that many items are in short supply. And every trip to the store is an added exposure risk to our members.
Can you tell us more about the Canteen’s supplier?
Sysco is Post 116’s partner in the Canteen. Sysco is a nationally-recognized distributor of food, cleaning supplies, and paperwork products. The Post’s relationship with Sysco goes back years, and Sysco is known throughout North Carolina for quality product at competitive prices.
What specific products will the Canteen offer?
While the Canteen’s product line-up is still being determined, we expect to be able to offer the following individual items as part of softlaunch:
1) Ground beef, frozen, 80/20, 5lbs.
2) Certified angus beef patties (10 to a pack), 5lbs.
3) Locally sourced pulled pork, 5lbs.
4) Italian Meatballs, frozen, 5lbs.
5) Tyson Chicken Tenders, 5lbs.
6) Costanza Kaiser Rolls, 12 pack.
7) Toilet Tissue, individually wrapped.
8) Nitrile Food Safety Gloves, Large, Box of 100.
9) Disinfectant hand soap, 1 gallon.
We are also considering bundles of products, including a Kids Weekend Bundle, Ultimate Cookout Bundle, Veggie Freezer Stock-up Bundle, and a Cleaning Bundle.
Under what authority does the Canteen operate?
The type of service we are providing through the Canteen is authorized by the April 16, 2020 update to the Wake County [Stay-at-Home] Proclamation, which states that “all businesses (including those businesses identified as Essential Activities, Essential Government Functions, Critical Infrastructure, or otherwise exempted under Section 10 of the March 26, 2020 Proclamation, as well as ANY OTHER retail businesses) are permitted to conduct online and telephonic sales with delivery or curbside pickup.”
The Canteen operates under the authority of a 5-person Committee made of members of the American Legion Post 116 and the American Legion Auxiliary of Post 116. Both the Committee and the Canteen itself were authorized by an affirmative vote of the Executive Committee of Post 116 on April 16, 2020.
How will this work?
We will post an ordering link on the Canteen page where you can select and purchase products. We will announce which day and an hour-range for you to come to Post 116 at 6400 Johnson Pond Road in Fuquay to pickup your order. All pickups will be “curbside no-touch,” meaning that customers will remain in their vehicles at all times so as to meet current North Carolina and Federal health and safety guidelines related to COVID-19.
This first order will be limited to the first 100 customers, and some item limits per order will apply. The Canteen is limiting the total number of customers on this first order so as to more efficiently manage the curbside pickup process and avoid traffic backups on Johnson Pond Road. Bear with us, this first order is considered a “softlaunch.” We are working hard to offer this first of it’s kind service to Southern Wake County in this crisis, and we promise to do our best. How often we offer this service through the Canteen will be determined by customer experience and feedback as we move forward.
All sales are final, no returns or exchanges. We are still determining on which day of the week online ordering and pickup will occur. Dates and times will be posted to the Canteen page.
