The Canteen at American Legion Post 116 The Canteen offers fresh and frozen protein, cleaning supplies, and paper products for sale to member

Canteen customers and supporters!

Over the weekend we made the difficult decision to cease Canteen operations.

The grocery supply chain seems to be normalizing. Sysco is resuming normal operations and won’t be able to leave a trailer all day like they once did. We looked into switching suppliers but we were not able to hammer out a deal that worked for all parties.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the dozen volunteers that came out to help us sling groceries, rain or shine, since April. Their sweat-equity is what really made the Canteen happen.

The Canteen was a worthwhile endeavor, one that got groceries to people during a time when it was important to reduce our trips to the store. Together with our customers, we donated over 300 pounds of protein to the Fuquay-Varina Emergency Food Pantry and Pine Acres Community Center. We also raised over $5k for the Post during a time when other revenue-generating programs were shutdown or curtailed.

Thank you for your patronage and support. As a Legion, we will continue to seek out ways to be helpful to the veterans and community-members living in Southern Wake County. Being of service, in good times or during a national crisis such as the one we find ourselves in, is part of the DNA of every member and supporter of the American Legion.

We have 3-steak bundles this month that look similar, what are the differences exactly?

The Country Pack is our least expensive option at $49.99.
It includes:
(2) Each 12 oz USDA Choice Beef Ribeye Boneless
(2) Each 12 oz USDA Choice Beef Strip Center Cut
(4) Each 8 oz USDA Choice Beef Top Sirloin Center Cut

The $59.99 Steak Lovers Box substitutes the (4) Beef Top Sirloin for (4) Beef Filets.

The $69.99 Steak Lovers Premium Box has the same cuts and quantities (ribeye, strip, filet), but the quality is Prime vs. Choice. Choice is fantastic, but Prime is generally considered a better quality meat with more marbling than Choice.

If you didn't know, now you know. Don't feel bad, I had to look it up myself:)

We've gotten this question a lot in the last few months: "The Canteen is open, but my freezer is full. Is there a way for me to make a purchase, and for you to donate it to someone in need?"

YES! Scroll down on our menu and look for "Chicken Breast - 5 oz portions - Pine Acres Donation." Throw this item in your cart and we will see that it goes to the Pine Acres Community Center in Fuquay-Varina. Pine Acres has been feeding school-aged children since this pandemic struck, and your donation will go directly to support that effort.

Since we started the Canteen in April, Post 116 and loyal customers of the Canteen have donated 300-pounds of protein to the Pine Acres Community Center and the Fuquay-Varina Emergency Food Pantry.

The American Legion Post 116 launches the Canteen

The Canteen offers fresh and frozen protein, cleaning supplies, and paper products in bulk for sale through our Sysco partner to members of the community as part of a once-per-week, all online ordering, curbside no-touch pickup operation that meets current North Carolina and Federal health and safety guidelines related to COVID-19.

All proceeds go towards the American Legion mission of supporting veterans and our community in Southern Wake County.

American Legion Post 116 is a 501(c)19 veterans service organization located at 6400 Johnson Pond Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC and is the sponsoring organization for the Canteen. Post 116 is the State of North Carolina’s largest American Legion Post with nearly 1,000 members. Under normal conditions, Post 116 is licensed to operate an onsite bar with prepared foods and a separate rented meeting space, known as the “Rec Room.” The Rec Room is not a part of Canteen operations at this time.

Why are we providing curbside pickup of protein, cleaning supplies and paper products? If you have been to a grocery store lately, then you know that many items are in short supply. And every trip to the store is an added exposure risk to our members.
