Former northerners who moved to Alabama teaching ourselves to be farmers (the hard way) raising quality Peafowl, Valais Blacknose Sheep, Highland Cattle, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, and Sebastopol Geese.

Some more pictures from the last 2 days in Ireland. We visited 2 castles, Jameson Distillery, a beach, and SO MANY SHEEP!!!! 🐑 🐏 🐑 🤩

I left for my annual pilgrimage and made it through Day #1 in Ireland!
We had to have the required Guinness, saw a lot of sheep, and visited an ancient Monastery.
The driving... on the right side of the car on the left side of the street on very narrow country roads where people drive too fast has not been one of the highlights. 🥴

We got to meet our newest "Future Farmhand" for Eden Valley Farm, our very own granddaughter Jacqueline! 😍
At just 6 pounds and 3 days of age she is currently under qualified for all farm duties 😂 but she is overqualified for making us forget about all of them to go spend time with her!
We can't wait til she is old enough for her own pony! 🤣

Everyone has been enjoying Asian Pear season around here! There are so many butterflies! I captured these 2 enjoying a pear that had been on the tree a little too long.

How else would you use an SUV? 😂
One year ago today I brought this little beauty home from Debra Stragan of Valais Vineyards Farms & Exotics in Ohio.
Oh, and my crazy Rhea, Circe, is in the kennel and there were chicks in the cardboard boxes. 😂

How do we artificially inseminate sheep? It is a little different than how cows are done.

1st, we have to "set them up" and make sure all of our girls getting done are physically ready to become moms at the same time.

2nd, we take them to a reproductive vet who specializes in small ruminants since it is a laparoscopic surgical procedure.

This video shows you how they secure them after sedation, prep them for the procedure, and then visit the vet for their insemination. Then they reverse sedation and they go back to living their normal sheep lives. It takes about 5 minutes per sheep! (But we drove close to 3 hours each way to get to the vet)
Now we wait. 5 months, and see if it worked.

This was the only way to start in the "Breed Up" program for Valais Blacknose since you couldn't buy Purebred Valais sheep in the US until 2021-22 (this is the year I found, I'm sure someone will correct me if it's wrong). 😅
Now, it is still a way to continue breeding up the generations of Valais and keep diversity in the genetics of your flock.
It is also how all of these 4H families that met up with us work to improve the genetics of their flocks.
