Back in feb.I had a valve replaced. I can take care of my body, but the heart is like a engine and I'm not good at engines! Recovery seemed like it took forever, but I am coming back strong. In fact I feel better now then I have felt in 5 years. I tell Grace that I start going backwards on my birthdays for at least the next 5 years!
The point being that I had to walk every day at least once. So dozi and I would walk down to the bridge every day, which lasted about a week. I told Grace we were going for a walk in the woods and took the walkie talkies,in case she needed me. From that day I realized I could see things again. Trees werent just trees and in a few days I was waking up happy every day, which I realized I hadn't done in years.
Back in 08,when the bottom fell out,my furniture just wasn't selling,so I decided to increase the size of my garden because people had to eat! It was good for 5 or 6 years, that's when I started "not waking up happy".
The picture is the first bench I've built in 11 years. It's simple, but it sits good and I am waking up happy. Some men can work the land or go to a factory every day. Others live off the land and never know what tomorrow brings, but they wake happy and tomorrow is always good

This is garlic scapes in bloom in my mother bed. 18 years ago a friend of mine,83 years old, asked me if I would like some garlic to grow. He got it from his uncle and had been growing it for bout 50 years and it was time to retire,he said it was called "elephant toe". Now it is time for me to retire. So,let me tell you what I have learned about garlic. We eat it 2 or 3 meals a day. It is very prolific,it comes back every year. Every head you dig will make 4 to 8 new ones from the baby's left in the ground, which will grow in one to two years. It doesn't take a lot of care, feed it in the fall when you plant and spring for growth and if you don't w**d. It doesn't care.
You can roast it ,pickle it ferment it

Raw honey and garlic fermented is a winter must have, not only for colds but so you don't catch anything when you're out and about. The scape is picked off so the bulb gets bigger,it is delicious saute in butter,or pesto. If you leave the scapes to flower, they make unusual bouquets and never need water and last forever! Plus you can make dolls out of the leaves.
Heads are a dollar piece for 100 field run which means all sizes.you want more the price goes down. Everyone you plant will grow, everyone you eat will make you healthier and everyone you sell is good too

Not much going on in owls hollow, just staying warm and enjoying life. Thought we would wish everyone a merry Christmas and a new years that is going to be fantastic.

10/19/2017

I go out this morning, just as the sun is coming up, to get a arm full of wood for the stove. I can still smell the sweet smell of the pig nut hickory I filled the stove with last night. The dogs are running around like crazy, enjoying the weather. As I come up the back steps,I pick a cherry tomato and pop it in my mouth, smile and think, today I won't sweat planting onions!

09/17/2017

I guess summer is starting to wind down. Getting ready to set out garlic and walking onions and potato onions. Now if any of you need seed stock,I've got plenty for sale. If you want an onion that goes on forever and it multiplies every year . All winter long you have greens and very sweet scalions. You know how good my garlic is. So if interested just let us know.

Well, it's hard to believe it is august already. I have been procrastinating all year about anniston downtown market, because we always have enjoyed everything about it and the hard work getting ready for Saturday was fun ( I guess ), but , I believe we are done. There a lot of reasons, I sure, but for me the main one is I have never, nor will I ever be, able to live a structured life and believe me, a matket
garden is!! So I have decided to wake up happy every morning and see my wife's smiling face and get her coffee and go out and see what the day has to offer. We always have something good growing if you need it

These are our winter onions they don't make a bulb but they multiply and topset. All winter they are the sweetest onion you've ever tasted,in the summer they are hot,in the fall you pick the topsets, dig the onions and transplant both when it gets cool. Walk never have to plant another onion seed and wait 100 days!

04/05/2017

April showers ect.but it makes it hard to plant,I guess that's why we are muddy nees farm. Wanted to start mowing the other day,had 2 sunny days in a row. Wound up cutting yellow thistle and yellow dock for green manure tea for garden
Thought about eating a few but my spring tonic is poke salad and it won't be long. Did pick some purple shramrock, white clover and wild ginger to put in mullien tea,Grace slept like a baby. Still haven't mowed!

03/14/2017

Well, when we came home,I felt so useless all I was doing was maintaining the status quo. Then I remembered a time I almost died from an infection and a very dear friend turned that around in a day,so I spent every free minute reading and what I figured out is that the same 12 minerals that my soil and plants need are the same as we need. As with my tomatoes, when you see something wrong you can find a combination of these minerals that will help it and that is made into a foliar spray, used very frequently. As with grace, sometimes you need something very strong, but as with her and tomatoes with chemical fertilizer, there are unwanted side effects. Muddy nees has now become a learning place, more after supper.

03/14/2017

Ok so what I discovered last fall, with my tomatoes and peppers, is the soil is life and the more you feed it with the 12 minerals it requires , the more it can offer to the plant. My late tomatoes were like none I have ever grown or tasted and the peppers gave me 35 lbs.of good tasting fruit off a 20 foot bed. But the most important thing is this. All the days I sat in the hospital with grace I noticed that every medicine they gave her required another to combat the side effects. Got to check supper mor to come

03/11/2017

I is the middle of March and I have nothing in the ground, except of course my garlic and walking onions and nature is providing my greens, dandelions, watercress almost,a lite wild ginger for tea and there are more on the. way, can't wait for poke salad. Grace has had a terrible winter she is finally home but a long way to go. We will have our heirloom tomatoes and garlic and scape pesto and of course hummus. Will see you at anniston downtown market in april. Watch for my next post what I've learned from this winter
