In June 1995, I began a journey that I knew was ordered and directed by the Lord. I left a 20 year career job with Winn Dixie to fulfill a dream of opening my own meat market. July 5th 1995, I walked out of Winn Dixie for the last time as an employee. For 20 years, I had steady income, job security, and a schedule routine of knowing what I would be doing.... Then suddenly all that was replaced with “What have I done”.
I rented the Noccalula trading post building from Jean Smalley ( one month before leaving Winn Dixie). Then it all got real. I had rent, utilities, building inspection and corrections, the task of finding suppliers and equipment that I could afford to open Paul’s Mountain Meats.
But God put people in my path to supply my every need. Many times without accepting any pay.
For nine weeks, my sons and I traveled a path of complete uncertainty, except I had faith and determination to get that little store opened. Many hours and days were spent traveling to get equipment for this new adventure. I must admit I had no clue what I was doing.
On Sept 15th 1995 it really happened. I had my final health inspection with approval to open. Immediately our family and store was welcomed to Noccalula Falls with open hearts and open arms. Many of you have become family to us.
Now for 25 years, we have successfully provided our customers with the finest meats at the most competitive prices.
Today, we want to thank you for your loyalty, love, and support to make this anniversary possibly.
We have had many struggles, but God has used each one of you to help us over come each one of them.
The continued love, prayers and concern for these past 2 1/2 years is the only thing that has enabled Wanda and me to endure this horrific storm. For this we are eternally grateful.
During this pandemic you would not believe the messages from our faithful and new customers thanking us for being here during this time of need. We know we have been loved by so many and not taken for granted.
In 1998, the highway expanded and put us out of business for 7 months. We had to rebuild, but again all of you came together and assured us we had made the right decision and that we were going to make it.
I’m glad I did not listen to the ones who told me that nothing has ever made it on this mountain. 25 years later I can thankfully say that all of you proved them wrong.
We are looking forward to serving you well into the future. On Saturday Sept 26th we will be serving cake and coffee to celebrate you!!
Our prayer is for each of you to know “The One from whom all blessings flow”!! We are humbled to be here for you for years to come.

In this mile stone.. Paul Bowen

This week's stories are a meat and three. We'll start on Lookout Mountain with the story of Paul's Mountain Meats and then tell you three other stories. Of course, music goes well with your meals, so we'll take you to Huntsville's Tangled String Studios and learn the Luthier's Secrets. Of course, we know man cannot live by bread alone, but you may want to make a meal out of the Monk's Bread we found in Cullman at Saint Bernard Abbey . Visit Cullman. Inside the Vault and down to the Mobile Museum of Art we'll show you the work of an artist who immortalized the working men and women from Avondale Mills in Sylacauga so join us, bright and early Saturday morning at 5:30 on WSFA-TV Montgomery or Sunday morning at 4:30 on WBRC FOX6 News Birmingham. It's The Absolutely Alabama Way to start your day!
