We had some nice weather yesterday while putting potatoes in the ground. This high tech planter unit used to be pulled by horses when it was originally engineered and is ground driven when the operator lowers the boot and hiller into the ground. The drive shaft spins the plates that carry the potatoes to the seed tube and down into the soil. The person on the back can help fill in any empty seed cells that get missed due to uneven feeding of the seed potatoes.

With most of the fall work being done around the farms, we would like to thank everyone that stopped out for their fall decorations this year. We appreciate your support and we’re looking forward to seeing you again next year!

This is a well overdue post, but we would like to thank everyone that made it out to the farm last fall to pick out their squash, pumpkins, gourds, straw, and cornstalks. Things have been extremely busy this spring, and the crops are looking good. The start of tomato harvest will begin soon, and the pumpkins will get sprayed with fungicide to protect the plants from disease. We’re excited to see everyone this fall and provide updates throughout the rest of the growing season!

It’s been a busy spring, and the upcoming summer will be no different. All of the pumpkins and squash were planted last weekend in just a couple short days thanks to the transplanter and water wheel. A cereal rye cover crop planted last fall was utilized to help reduce soil erosion, and add some organic matter to the soil once worked down with a high-speed disc. Direct seeded varieties are already poking through the top layer of soil and off to a great start. All of the transplants that were started in mid-May are looking healthy and are enjoying the heat and sun. All of the pumpkins have been continuously irrigated so far due to extremely dry conditions.

The hoophouse tomatoes are off to a good start this year, and as of yesterday, approximately 12,000 onions are in the ground! The onions were transplanted by hand after making a pass with our waterwheel and transplanting machine. This allows us to punch holes through our biodegradable plastic mulch and put down starter fertilizer to give the onions a good boost. We also have drip irrigation tape stretched under the plastic to irrigate the crops all season long. There is still lots to be done this spring, but we’re off to a great start!
