In December 2001, sixty-nine small-scale Lenca farmers in the mountain town of Marcala did something quietly radical: they pooled their coffee under the umbrella of a rural credit union and decided to sell it together.
They called themselves Café Orgánico Marcala – COMSA – and a quarter-century later, they’re one of the largest coffee exporters in Honduras and one of the most influential voices in Latin America for sustainable farming. Farmers from all over the world travel to Marcala to learn from them. The growing techniques that started with 69 people are now shaping organic agriculture across an entire region.
In the cup, COMSA’s work shows up as exactly the kind of coffee you want to wake up to: caramel, hazelnut, and a whisper of green pepper on the nose, with smooth hazelnut and caramel flavors carrying a medium-to-full body and low-to-medium acidity. Forgiving, balanced, and quietly extraordinary.
