Just a quick update … we posted on both of these plants earlier this spring. The black German Iris (which is really more dark dark violet) finally opened up today … which happens to be one of my favorite things about this group of irises … each variety opens at a different time. And as you can see in the picture the ‘Sun King’ Aralia is only getting better and better … blowing up with color in a lightly shady spot of the yard.

DEAL OF THE WEEK … and this is a sweet one in all honesty😎 … Weeping Alaskan Cedars … three cultivars including ‘Green Arrow’, ‘Pendula’, and ‘Glauca pendula’ … $39.50 through this Saturday. And for those of you that are not familiar with this tree, it is a spectacular, and not so easy to find, specimen tree. Or I suppose in small groupings as well. And here’s the trick to growing them 😳 … DO NOT dig a hole and bury them below the soil line! 😬 No for real … you grow these by chopping up the ground with a shovel, place the tree literally on top of that ground, stick a rock, log, or whatever else tickles your fancy in front of the tree, and back fill with additional dirt. This way you can water the tree adequately and it will always drain well. Alaskan Cedars, and really almost all falsecypress, do not like wet feet so to speak. That’s it and that’s all … I will post a pic below of this planting strategy so you have a visual as well. 😉

Wow … time flies! Two weeks of it evidently😳 … okay back to great plants in our yards 🦾. This particular little pink delight is ‘Firewitch’ Dianthus (Dianthus gratianopolitanus 'Firewitch'). To be perfectly honest I had to “grow” (🤪🥴) into loving this plant. Dianthus as a genus has come a long way and the newer cultivars put on quite a show in the spring … as you can see here. They are fantastic for spilling over steps, rocks, logs and just as a general ground cover. And that coupled with the unusual blue tinted evergreen foliage and the dainty lightly fragrant pink blooms (and you can actually get Dianthus with all kinds of colored blooms now) make these babies a must … at least for my yard 😎. Furthermore, a wonderful little grower trick on these is to deadhead them after they bloom, fertilize them lightly, and they will bloom all over again! And they are also great for letting little kids pick because there are a gazillion flowers so the damage the little kids can do is minimized … hahaha! Enjoy!!!

Running a bit late tonight … but here we go! This dazzling little gem is Double Play Candy Corn Spiraea and it honest to goodness stops people in their tracks and draws them in like a sailor to a Siren! Although unlike a Siren, Candy Corn doesn’t kill you when you approach it 🤣🤣🤣.

This cultivar of spiraea is EXTREMELY colorful throughout all off spring and then smothers itself with pink blooms as summer approaches. I obviously love this plant … along with everyone else that has it in their yard. It’s a cinch to grow, handles full sun to light shade and looks great spilling over rocks or as a border.

And if you want a little growers trick bonus keep reading … after the new growth hardens off to a lighter green trim it back lightly, fertilize with high nitrogen, water it well, and you will get a second flush of lovely new growth. But don’t tell your neighbors that trick so your yard can look better than theirs 😉😜
