Today I was taking Vanziii and Preacher into the barn when Vanziii spotted Angus.

And apparently decided she needed to introduce herself.

Immediately.

Angus was completely on board with this plan.

I was not.

โ€œCan I go say hi?โ€

No.

โ€œJust for a minute?โ€

Also no.

โ€œWhat if I walk slowly?โ€

Still no.

Preacher looked at Angus.

Looked at Vanziii.

Looked at me.

And appeared to be trying to figure out why his mother was shopping for men right in front of him. ๐Ÿ’€

I finally got them put in the stall.

Case closed.

Except Angus refused to accept the ruling.

He stood outside.

Waiting.

Staring.

Hoping.

Like a man who had just watched the love of his life disappear through airport security.

Meanwhile Iโ€™m standing there wondering how many times I need to explain that Vanziii already has a boyfriend.

Not only does she have a boyfriendโ€ฆ

She is literally carrying his baby.

Angus remained unconvinced.

Today was Chromeโ€™s first day wearing his new fly mask.

A fact he took as a direct attack on his personal freedom.

In all the years Iโ€™ve owned him, that horse has never run from me.

Today?

We played Pasture Parade three separate times before I finally got the mask fastened. ๐Ÿ™„

Once it was on, I thought the drama was over.

Then I noticed Chrome standing with Deacon.

Being sweet.

Being patient.

Being fatherly.

Honestly, it was kind of adorable. โค๏ธ

Then Deacon became very interested in the fly mask.

And instead of stopping himโ€ฆ

Chrome appeared to be providing guidance. ๐Ÿ‘€

Not once.

Twice.

Thatโ€™s when I realized this wasnโ€™t a father-son bonding moment.

This was an apprenticeship. ๐Ÿ’€

Chrome spent all morning trying to convince me that fly masks are cruel and unusual punishment, and by afternoon he was recruiting the next generation into the resistance.

Fortunately, the mask survived.

Unfortunately, Deacon now has ideas. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Chrome spent the morning trying to court Vanziii.

At first it was:

Chrome thought he was getting somewhere.

He was not.

The second he brought up mating, Vanziii informed him that she was done with this conversation, this relationship, and quite possibly men in general.

Then she stormed off. ๐Ÿ’€

Poor Chrome.

Absolutely devastated.

Left standing alone in the pasture.

Staring into the distance.

Questioning everything.

Thinking about what could have been.

For roughly 17 seconds.

Then Prudence walked by.

Chromeโ€™s head came up.

His ears perked forward.

The grieving process immediately concluded.

By the time Vanziii reached the other side of the pasture, Chrome had already updated his relationship status, downloaded three dating apps, and begun exploring new opportunities.

Iโ€™m genuinely curious what people believe the real-world solution is.

With Mexico currently closed to U.S. horse exports and restrictions affecting some livestock movement into Canada, a lot of conversations are happening within the horse industry.

So hereโ€™s my question:

If slaughter disappeared completely tomorrow, what should happen to unwanted, dangerous, chronically unsound, unhandled, neglected, or otherwise unplaceable horses?

Iโ€™m not asking what the ideal world looks like.

Iโ€™m asking what solution is practical, scalable, humane, and financially realistic in the real world.

What would you do?

Today Vlad found something in the clubhouse.

โ€œHey babiesโ€ฆ come see this.โ€

Story tried to warn him.

โ€œVladโ€ฆ donโ€™t.โ€

But they followed him anyway.

Deacon wasnโ€™t so sure.

Story called him a sissy.

So he went too. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

A few minutes later Vlad came running back out like something was chasing him.

Which was concerning.

Then Moose showed up, saw everyone inside, and went in too.

Because apparently nobody in this group has survival instincts.

Vlad started to go back in.

Stopped.

Thought about it.

And suddenly decided whatever was in there was absolutely none of his business.

Lucy noticed the suspicious activity.

Looked around.

Then wisely said,

โ€œNot involved.โ€

And left. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Then we saw a glimpse of the Fairy Portal!

Moments later the babies came stampeding out of the clubhouseโ€ฆ

Followed by fairies.

Followed by dragons.

And as chaos erupted behind him, Vlad casually walked past and said:

โ€œIt was an accident.โ€

Sure, Vlad.

After the boys got caught smoking and watching Captain Kangaroo in the clubhouse, the mares made it very clear that the clubhouse was officially off limits.

So today Chrome took his babysitting responsibilities very seriously.

First, he inspected the clubhouse.

No babies inside. โœ…

Then he came over and attempted to sweet talk me into taking over babysitting duties.

I declined. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Apparently satisfied that everything was under control, Chrome got distracted.

Which is exactly when Story and Preacher snuck into the clubhouse behind his back. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

The entire operation fell apart in less than five minutes.

On the bright side, nobody got caught smoking.

On the downside, Chrome will not be receiving the Babysitter of the Year award. ๐Ÿ†โŒ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿด

People sometimes forget that even domesticated stallions still have very strong natural instincts.

In this video, Chrome checks several important items off his daily to-do list:

โœ… Smell the mareโ€™s manure and leave his own โ€œcomment.โ€
โœ… Keep an eye on the dogs around the mares and foals.
โœ… Politely wait near his current favorite mare and see if heโ€™s allowed to join the alfalfa buffet.

Notice I said politely.

Because despite being the stallion, Chrome knows exactly who runs this herd.

Hint: Itโ€™s not him. ๐Ÿคฃ

The mares make the rules. Chrome just tries his best to stay in their good graces.

Unfortunately for Chrome, he wasnโ€™t the main character today.

With the heat index pushing 105ยฐ over the next few days, it was time for sunscreen.

Unfortunately, Chrome remains firmly opposed to this concept.

He was absolutely convinced I had tricked him into participating in some sort of horse rights violation. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฃ

The good news?

Horse owners, this is your reminder to look underneath your horses today.

With all the rain, humidity, heat, and flies weโ€™ve been dealing with lately, conditions are perfect for fly-related skin problems.

One of the most overlooked areas is the belly and midline. Flies love to target this area, and what starts as a little irritation can quickly become a painful sore if it goes unnoticed.

The problem is that most of us donโ€™t see it until itโ€™s already been there for a while.

Next time youโ€™re feeding, grooming, or doing chores, take a few extra seconds to check underneath your horses. Look for hair loss, scabs, raw spots, drainage, swelling, or anything that doesnโ€™t look right.

Catching it early can save a lot of headaches later.

But year after year, he helps raise babies, babysits weanlings, teaches young horses how to behave, and somehow manages to keep order around the ranch while still carrying himself with all the confidence of a stallion.

The truth is, every breeding program needs great mares and great stallions.

But it also needs that one wise old horse who quietly teaches the next generation how to be horses. When mom walks away, everything is still okay. When life gets exciting, thereโ€™s no reason to panic.

Thatโ€™s Oldie Goldie.
