Thank you all for an incredible season at River & Root Farm 💙

After closely monitoring the fields this week, we’ve made the tough decision not to reopen and to officially close for the blueberry season.

We simply do not have enough fruit to provide a satisfying picking experience over several more days.

This year brought extraordinary weather challenges. We estimate we lost at least 70% of our crop due to severe freeze damage and ongoing drought conditions.

Farming teaches patience, humility, resilience, and gratitude.

We deeply appreciate every family, friend, neighbor, and visitor who supported us this season. Your encouragement helped carry us through a very difficult agricultural year.

While blueberry season has ended, the farm continues to grow and evolve. We’re excited to share future offerings beyond berries, including gatherings, educational experiences, wellness events, and more opportunities to enjoy the beauty of the land year-round.

We also have honey and bamboo poles available for sale for pickup at the farm only. Reach out to us via phone, email, direct message, or reply to this post to coordinate.

Thank you for being part of our story.

With gratitude,
River & Root Farm

Dear River & Root Farm community,

Because of limited blueberry supply as our green berries continue ripening, we will be CLOSED:

🌿 Wednesday, May 13
🌿 Saturday, May 16
🌿 Sunday, May 17

This season has brought such overwhelming support, and we are deeply grateful. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we honor nature’s rhythms and allow the berries the thyme they need to fully ripen.

One of the beautiful and humbling realities of farming is that abundance cannot be rushed. We remain committed to working in partnership with nature rather than against her.

We’ll continue sharing updates next week as more berries ripen in the field.

Thank you for supporting local, regeneratively grown blueberries here in Alachua County 💙🫐

With gratitude,

Happy Mother’s Day from River & Root Farm 🌿💛

Today we’re feeling especially grateful for the women who helped shape our family, this land and the spirit behind what we’re building here.

A special thank you to our mamas, Mary Lee & Deborah, for their love, wisdom, encouragement and steady support through all seasons of life and farming.

We also want to celebrate all the mothers, grandmothers and families who have visited the farm this season. Watching children run through the fields, play in the rain, explore nature and experience the land together has been one of the greatest joys of this journey so far.

As a family connected to education and community, we care deeply about creating spaces where the next generation can slow down, reconnect with nature and learn through direct experience with the earth.

We’re excited to continue growing toward:
🌱 Nature-based education
🌱 Family friendly gatherings
🌱 Seasonal memberships
🌱 Workshops and community events
🌱 Opportunities for children and families to connect with the land

We’d love to hear from you:
What kinds of gatherings, classes or experiences would you love to see here at the farm?

Thank you for supporting our small family farm and being part of this growing community 🤍

Due to limited supply, we will be CLOSED tomorrow, Saturday, May 9.

Thank you all so much for the incredible support this season already 💙

We will reopen Sunday from 8am–6pm in celebration of Mother’s Day, and we recommend coming early for the best picking. We may be picked out by afternoon depending on turnout and field conditions.

There are lots of green berries ripening in the fields for the coming weeks, but only so many blueberries at peak ripeness right now for prime picking 🫐

Feel free to message or call us for real thyme updates before heading out.

We’re deeply grateful for all your support, patience, and excitement as we grow this season together!

🫐 Thank you for a beautiful opening day 🫐

We want to extend a genuine thank you to everyone who came out to the farm, picked berries, spent time in the fields, and supported us in so many ways. It was a special day for us, and we don’t take that for granted.

This season has come with its challenges, which makes your presence and support all the more meaningful.

We’re open again this weekend:
Saturday & Sunday
8am–6pm (as long as berries last)

We look forward to welcoming you back — or meeting you for the first time.

With gratitude,

🫐 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT 🫐

We look forward to welcoming guests to River & Root Farm’s blueberry u-pick opening day TOMORROW. Our hours will remain WEDNESDAYS, SATURDAYS, and SUNDAYS from 8am-6pm or by private appointment for as long as there are berries available.

Following the harrowing wildfires this week in Alachua County and elsewhere in North Florida, including, as we write to you now, a 160-acre fire just a few miles west of the farm on State Road 18, we have made the decision to temporarily rescind our announced access to the farm’s trail system that leads to the Santa Fe River. While we have full trust in our customers to act responsibly - we simply cannot risk unsupervised access at this time. The slightest mistake could have devastating consequences to the farm and our surrounding community.

🫐WITH THAT BEING SAID🫐 - our previously announced $5 entry fee is OPTIONAL until further notice. Visitors may make use of our lounge area, our picnic tables, and will have the same access to our field of blueberries you have become accustomed to throughout the years. Picking prices remain as announced. We will also have water, sparkling water, seed-oil free snacks, and honey (from the bees that pollinated our berries this year) available for sale.

🫐REAL TALK🫐 - no matter how successful our season is this year, this farm will be operating at a significant financial loss. This is due to a combination of factors - the worst freeze in at least 3 decades, global inflationary pressures on mandatory necessities such as fertilizer and equipment, farm infrastructure and supply issues we were in the dark about, commitments not honored, labor shortages, and more. As we approach the eve of the re-launch of this historic operation, make no mistake - this farm’s future, like the future of so many others - is very much in doubt.

If you feel compelled to support the next generation of farmers to stay in the fight to feed the world healthy, SPRAY-FREE food like our blueberries, to fight against our broken, monopolized food systems by building new systems from the ground up, to live our values, to advocate for clean water, and to JOIN US in the fight to protect Old, Wild Florida - we will gratefully accept that financial support any way you see fit. But we will not impose a last-minute, mandatory fee on our customers when we cannot currently provide the access to our beautiful property during this historic drought in the way we had envisioned.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. River & Root Farm looks forward to welcoming you tomorrow for our Earth Day Grand Opening.

With Gratitude,
David Tuthill
Owner
