Just like a rattle snake they will let you know before they strike. It’s rut season know and beware of a bisons attitude and don’t get out of your car.

When around bison, trying to hear vocalizations or watching certain body expressions won't tell you much, but their primary warning signal is right in their tail. Understanding this body language is key to knowing how the bison are feeling and being able to use this knowledge for low-stress handling and keeping both handlers and the herd calm.

Here is how to decode what a bison is telling you:

Hanging Straight Down: Calm, relaxed, and content. The herd is just going about its day grazing.

Slightly Lifted / Twitching: Curious, alert, or mildly annoyed. Something in their environment caught their attention.

Straight Up or Rigid Hook: Clear Warning. The bison is agitated, startled, or preparing to run or charge.

Reading these subtle behavioral cues allows us to give them space and work with their natural instincts rather than against them.
