Newest addition to Cottontail Canyon?

HONEYBEES! 🐝🐝🐝

Picked up our nucleus colony last night, and installed their frames into the gorgeous long Langstoth hive Jason built (that carpentry shows again!!) this morning. So far they seem to be settling in well.

Sometime in the future, that means honey harvesting!

And with a few finishing "extra" touches the bee hive box is fully finished. We have a spot cleared for it's placement, located right between our Pollinator Field and the lower meadow along the driveway. We will be doing that tomorrow, letting the veggitation wilt down that a bit more and seeing if a second application is needed.

And Thursday evening we will go to Powell area to pick up our Nuc of bees and bring them home to their new house.

Eggs are reloaded in the farmstand! $3 a dozen - cage-free, pasture-raised, spoiled little hens making some delicious eggs!

What a busy week on the Homestead. Mother nature has been a little bit favorable and we were able to get the garden tilled up three times on Monday and Tuesday. Then Tuesday evening we were able to get half planted.

"Mary's Best" that was transplanted last spring returned!! We thought the chickens had killed it off but the roots took hold and returned! We snipped a few big stalks sparingly andafe our first Strawberry Rhubarb pie.

We hope everyone is having a good week. Our chickens got a feathered friendly visit this morning. It was brief, the turkey hen drifted off into the thicket a few seconds later.

Our Cottontail Canyon self-serve farm stand is officially open, and we have pasture-raised eggs available for $3 per dozen!

Jason, our resident Chaos Carpenter, built this entire stand from scratch, which took a ridiculous number of hours, several layers of sawdust, and probably a few conversations with lumber that should not be repeated in polite company. But it’s done, it’s beautiful, and it’s ready for business!

The stand is self-serve during daylight hours... Message us for the address, if you don't know where we are!

Payment is cash or Venmo, and eggs are available while they last. We’ll keep restocking as the hens allow, because they are tiny feathered employees with absolutely no respect for inventory management.
Also, tiny plea from the farm budget goblins: please return egg cartons when you can.

This is just the beginning for our little farm stand. As the seasons unfold, we’ll be adding more goodies like sourdough bread, honey, produce, and probably pumpkins, because ... Duh.

Today was a big day. . With beautiful bright blue skies, warm temps, and a mild breeze. What comes after a long cold winter and coming into spring planting season you might ask. . .it's MANURE DAY!!

Really though, very little smell and the coop. Kinda dusty actually so the windows all got opened up. The linoleum sheet worked perfectly. Scoop out and spread 98% of the Doo on the garden in a nice layer. Then pulled the whole sheet out to wash it off. Then we raked the corners and edges clean, simply right through the slat floors. Even the inside got a hose down to remove the last of the dust.

Then we hooked the Zero turn up to the hitch and dragged the whole thing out into the clump of trees in the pasture. Hens will have some shade, a few things to hide under now and one more coming tomorrow.

And a little sad news, it would seem we lost a black chicken today. I found a feather pile while mowing and bunny only counts 15. It's almost dark and roosting time so we will do a double check head count if this rain moves out right quick.

We've been busy busy as spring has been trying to get started. Can't quite to seem to make up its mind yet. Stay tuned, we've been building something cool and it should be ready to reveal in a the next few days.

Hems are excellimg in their duties. It's been fun watching them roam all around the house, pastures, and even as far as the culvert in the mowed grass on both sides of the driveway. Egg production is rolling well with 12-16 per DAY!!

Today was spent doing some land clearing down in the pond location while the paint was drying (Easter egg 😛). Pretty much the last of the Dogwood, Multiflora Rose, Swamp Rose, and Hawthorne. Blood was spilled, my foot punctured, and my muck boots have three new holes through the soles. Good news, only two ticks on my today and that is a WIN.

I'm going to give this pile a few weeks, let things green up a bit more, and then torch it away. On to the next thing to clean/remove.
