You have never actually seen the present. Everything your eyes show you is information arriving from the past.

Light travels extraordinarily fast, but not infinitely fast. In a vacuum its speed is exactly 299,792,458 meters per second, meaning light takes about 3.3 nanoseconds to travel one meter.

So if your fingertips are roughly a meter from your eyes, the light reaching you from them left about 3 nanoseconds earlier. The image in the post is therefore essentially correct, although the exact delay depends on the distance between your eyes and fingertips.

Increase the distance and the same principle becomes much easier to notice. You see the Moon about 1.3 seconds in the past. Sunlight reaching Earth began its journey roughly 8 minutes and 19 seconds earlier.

Look at Sirius and you’re seeing light roughly 8.6 years old. Look at the Andromeda Galaxy and you’re seeing it roughly 2.5 million years ago. With powerful telescopes, astronomers detect galaxies whose light has traveled for more than 13 billion years.

Astronomy is therefore something remarkable: the farther into space we look, the farther backward in cosmic history we see.

And the same physics applies to the person standing beside you. The delay is unimaginably tiny, but technically, every face you’ve ever seen was already in the past by the moment its light reached your eyes.

There is no visual experience of an absolutely instantaneous “now.” Seeing is always receiving a message from a moment that has already happened.

Seriously?!…wow!…

A former senior adviser to Anthony Fauci has pleaded guilty in a federal case involving efforts to conceal government records connected to COVID-19 research during the pandemic.

David Morens, who worked as a senior adviser in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director’s office, admitted to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government by hiding communications that should have been preserved as federal records.

According to prosecutors, Morens and others anticipated that their communications could become subject to Freedom of Information Act requests. They used Morens’ personal Gmail account instead of his official government email while discussing matters involving a controversial NIH-funded bat coronavirus research grant and efforts to restore that funding.

The case grew out of years of scrutiny over Morens’ emails and the government’s handling of questions surrounding the origins of COVID-19. Some previously disclosed messages showed Morens discussing his preference for Gmail because his NIH account was frequently subject to FOIA requests.

The guilty plea is significant because these allegations are no longer simply accusations contained in an indictment. Morens has now admitted criminal responsibility for the conspiracy charge and could face up to five years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for November.

However, the case does not establish where COVID-19 originated, nor does Morens’ plea prove that the virus came from a laboratory. The criminal case concerns the concealment and handling of federal records surrounding COVID-era research and grant discussions.

What it does highlight is a fundamental issue of government transparency. Records created by public officials can become essential evidence for understanding how major decisions were made, especially during an event as consequential as a global pandemic.

Years later, the fight over what happened behind the scenes during COVID-19 is clearly far from over.
