We found ourselves at a crossroads, all of us: Gig, Ann, Kate, and Molly, the Leadbetters. Gig and Ann were firefighters, nomads, and adventurers who climbed, skied, rafted, and hiked in landscapes all over the globe. Eventually they became college professors and had two beautiful daughters who they raised in Colorado. Kate and Molly wandered their way to Idaho attending The College of Idaho beco

ming ‘yotes for life, after graduation they followed in their parents’ footsteps to become wildland firefighters, lovers of nature, nomads, and adventurers. Eventually the firefighter daughters and the college professor parents were at a crossroads at the same time. Gig the homebrewer, Ann the bored-of-grading-papers, Kate the artist/entrepreneur, and Molly searching for a muse, each realized they could use a new direction. Where the inspiration to start a cidery came from is unclear: maybe from the undifferentiated cosmos, maybe from pure desire, maybe an unbounded love of good drinks, maybe from aimless web-surfing. The Leadbetters took it up with passion and Meriwether Cider was born. We brew our cider with the same zeal we brought to scampering around outside. Every bottle, every can, and every keg will be handmade, hand bottled, and hand labeled, so be assured that every one of our products has been handled by one of us, like, at least, a ton of times. Cider has a very rich heritage in the United States, by the eighteenth century Americans in New England were brewing 300,000 gallons of cider a year but by the end of Prohibition, hard cider had almost vanished. We brew our cider from apples grown in the Northwest, it is naturally gluten-free, making it essentially guilt free, right? Our cider isn’t sweet enough to give you flashbacks from freshmen year of college, but just sweet enough to transport you to crisp fall days and champagne powder. We’re brewing up many different kinds of ciders, including semi-sweet, semi-dry, blackberry, cherry, plum, ginger, gin botanical, apple pie, apricot, and hopped. Do you like beer? You should try our hopped cider, it’s a delightful blend of cider and the same hops you taste in your favorite IPA without that pesky gluten messing with your insides. Don’t like apples? Well… you should still give cider a try, it’s really delicious, trust us, we’ve tried a lot of it.

I’m at it again! Molly here with another round of Meriwether history ahead of our very exciting anniversary celebration, Ten at the Pen, on June 13th!
This was probably my favorite group of photos to go through, it’s some of the awards and recognitions we’ve won in the past ten years! To say I’m proud of what Meriwether is and how far we’ve come is an understatement. What a wild, sometimes relentless ride it has been. There are plenty of times that make it all worth it, and the following pictures are all examples of those “we did it” moments that are so precious.

Memories are attached to the description of each photo!

It’s me, Molly! Bringing you the fourth installment of the history of Meriwether Cider before our big 10-year anniversary celebration, Ten at the Pen, on June 13th!

These memories were a little tough to look through. This was our COVID era. When I look back on those days, I remember the almost constant stress of what was going to happen next, not knowing what we even needed to prepare ourselves for. But when I analyze this period with the cushion of years between, I realize that what truly strikes me is how loved we felt. I had people reaching out daily asking what Meriwether was doing, how they could buy cider, gift cards, whatever to make sure that we made it out the other side of this, because we mattered to them. You don’t get stark examples of that in business all that often, and it really was so touching that we had a spot in this community that people were willing to fight for us to keep. I remind myself of that lesson daily.

Descriptions of the memories of each photo are attached, feel free to reminisce alongside me!
