There are about 1 million choices that go into growing grapes and making great wine. One of them is which clone to plant. You don’t just say I’m going to plant Chardonnay, you select the root stock that’s best suited to your soil, and the clone that will produce the style of wine you are aiming for.

These photos are a great illustration of what clones are about. Both of them are Chardonnay grapes, but clone 1066, the first, brings terrific flavors, but lower yields because of its tendency to produce "hens and chicks"--or tiny berries mixed in with a few bigger berries. The second photo, clone 76, has significantly higher yields, and flavors that are good, but lack the drama of 1066. We plant both, and combine them in our winemaking to obtain the best of both worlds.

We are proud to share that our flagship Bordeaux blend, Sky Island Red, was just awarded a Gold Medal and a 94 point rating at the annual New York Wine Classic. 🍷🏅

This is the biggest annual judging of New York wines, and more golds go to Hudson Valley wineries every year—24 Golds for our region this time!

Reversing the alphabet (we’re tired of always being last! 🤣):

Whitecliff, Quartz Rock, Rosina’s, Millbrook, Milea, Fjord, and Benmarl all winning golds combine to make the Valley a great place to come for fine wine!
