Vineyard on Kiernan Farm

Vineyard on Kiernan Farm Bruynswick Vineyard at Kiernan Farm is a family owned and run vineyard that sits on the Shawangunk Wine Trail.

We grow cab franc, chardonnay, traminette, itasca, la crescent, vidal blanc and marquette wine grapes. In May of 2010 the Kiernan family planted 3 acres of wine grape vines on the family farm. We currently have Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Traminette varietals growing. With the help of some future in-laws and hard working friends we managed to get all 2050 vines in the ground in 2010. We rounde

d out the vineyard in 2011, added another row of experimental vines, and now have about 2300 vines growing! There has been a steep learning curve and we are taking it one step at a time. With majestic views of the Shawangunk Mountains and the ambiance of Kiernan Farm, that raises 100% grass fed beef, and an established Airbnb we foresee Bruynswick Winery as a wonderful addition to the farm.

Life of a Grapevine - Day 204

This week marked the 200th day in the vineyard this year. The summer has been long, warm and good, and last year’s days of rain are a distant memory...yet the late spring frost lingers in our minds. We begin to determine the readiness for harvest. Looking, touching, tasting, smelling, listening, testing and thinking are all important in making the decision to harvest. The Traminette berries are a golden hue. The flesh is softening yet the skin is tough. The seeds and stems browning. The birds are chirping, their eyes set on the ripening fruit. Lignification begins to set in on the canes. The berries are supple on the tongue, sweet yet tart to the palate. Using a refractometer we measure for sugar and excitement builds...Sample after sample, we check again and again, not sure if our eyes do not deceive us...Harvest is coming!!!

The Life of a Grapevine
Day 186

August sunshine makes for long and warm summer days. It’s everything this vineyard needs at the moment. An early damp spring on the farm had us worried we were in store for a repeat of last year. At the current moment, the more sun the better. Our Traminette is a mature 9 years old now and sunlight makes all the magic happen. As the earth begins to crack beneath our feet from long weeks with little rain, the vines begin to stress, causing them to send their roots deeper into the soil in search of water. As a result (along with leaf, shoot and canopy management) there is greater energy targeted to the fruiting zone and higher sugar production in the berries. We are still about two weeks behind in terms of ripeness, but with any luck, Mother Nature will have mercy on us and the small crop we’re still hoping to harvest this year! 🌞🍇⛰👨‍🌾

Life of a Grapevine
Days 141-142
Bloom to Fruit Set
There’s never a dull moment in the vineyard. After months and months of preparation it is now up to Mother Nature as bloom becomes fruit set. Fruit set occurs after pollen is released from male flower parts (anthers), lands on receptive female flower parts (stigmas), produces a tube that grows to the ovules, and fertilizes eggs contained in them. Fertilized eggs form seeds, which induce surrounding tissues to grow and form a berry.

Life of a Grapevine
Day 118
Cabernet Franc
“Old Trunk-New Trunk”

It really is amazing how resilient grape vines are! With 100% of the vinifera buds, canes and trunks not surviving the winter’s polar vortex, shoots from the base are coming out strong. We are in process of cutting out the old trunks to make room for the new ones sprouting up.

And not to mention, the silver lining to the added time and labor involved in not using any herbicide in our vineyard...the bounty of wild strawberries that are dotting every row of the vineyard floor in red and pink. Makes for a tasty and unexpected treat! 🍇🌱🍓

Day 105
Mow Day

Post budbreak has proved to be a heartbreak. Most of the vinifera buds and canes were lost with the few sub -10°F winter nights and late April frost.

All is not lost though. New shoots are bursting from the trunk base and with a little TLC they’ll be back up and running for the next season.

Day 70
Pruning Cabernet Franc
The pruning is done and the tying has begun! Cabernet Franc took a hard hit this winter but hopefully the secondary and tertiary buds will give some fruit.
