Harvesting some gorgeous calendula this morning! The sun is out after all the rain this week and it kinda feels like a sauna out here 😅

The first calendula bloom of the season 😍 It would be hard to overstate the importance of this beauty in the herbal apothecary. Need a salve for burns, bruises, cuts, or poorly healing wounds? Need a tea to help with gut health? Need an antiviral tincture with immunostimulating properties? Need to activate tissue regeneration and epithelial tissue development? Something to help with mucous membrane inflammation? Calendula’s got you - for these things and much more. It also adds color and flavor to food. Calendula is a must have 😊 Hoping for a bountiful harvest this season!

California poppy is starting to bloom, and I harvested a bunch of marshmallow leaf this week, along with red clover blossoms and some arnica. Nothing has kicked into high gear yet, but it’s getting closer…this is the calm before the real chaos 😊

More volunteers! This is licorice growing with the squash. Plants just keep randomly showing up everywhere 😁 For me, licorice is the perfect example of why you should try things for yourself and not just take other people’s word for things. I don’t like the taste of licorice - or fennel, or aniseed - it’s all a big nasty yuck to me! But licorice doesn’t taste like licorice 🤷🏼‍♀️ It really just tastes sweet in my experience. It makes my daily cold infusion of marshmallow root taste better. It sweetens some not so great tasting herbal teas. And a little goes a long way…too much can be cloying. So these few volunteers are more than enough for me!

I try not to waste anything - it’s part of being a good steward of what God has given. Comfrey leaves and stems that were damaged by the hail mostly go in the compost pile. I remove the flowers as much as possible so that I don’t have a huge comfrey patch growing in the compost 😃 The rest goes into the water trough to make comfrey tea for fertilizer

I decided to dig and process some comfrey roots when I cut the aerial parts back yesterday. While I feel comfortable with processing leaves and flowers in the drying shed, I always dry roots in the dehydrator. Roots take longer to dry & I feel like the dehydrator gives more consistent temperature and more even drying. And these comfrey roots are super mucilaginous! (The fancy word for slimy 😁)

It’s been a bad news/good news sort of week. The bad news is that we got some hail that really beat up the comfrey. The good news is that the comfrey was so tall that it protected the squash seedlings from any damage. It was time to cut the comfrey back anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️ It will quickly grow back, and the hail battered leaves will be a boon to the compost. I’m just thankful we didn’t get the baseball sized hail that some in our area got 😳

Harvesting some beautiful wood betony today 😍 Wood betony is one of my go-to herbs when I’m anxious or battling a tension headache. I think it has a lovely vanilla-y undertone, and it is fantastic as a tea or a tincture.
