I’d love to say we plant in perfect conditions every time. Fluffy soil, ideal moisture, no debris, no challenges. Unfortunately that's not always the case. There is a constant push and pull: on one side we have a well-documented window; on the other, we have soil conditions.
The well documented window says: don't plant too late or you won't optimize the growing season. What fears us most is an extended wet spell that keeps us out for weeks and weeks. It's a sickening feeling. The prevent plant of 2013 is in the back of our mind.
Also well documented soil conditions say: don't plant in slabby muck (you idiot), you can't achieve uniform depth and spacing. What is somewhat mystifying is that soil temperature changes the soil's physical characteristics if moisture stays constant (which it doesn't), and we farm over 50 different soil types.
The photos here are probably a good example of what *not* to do, especially knowing ideal conditions arrived while we were still within our planting window.
Authenticity always wins!
