I’d love to say we plant in perfect conditions every time. Fluffy soil, ideal moisture, no debris, no challenges. Unfortunately that's not always the case. There is a constant push and pull: on one side we have a well-documented window; on the other, we have soil conditions.

The well documented window says: don't plant too late or you won't optimize the growing season. What fears us most is an extended wet spell that keeps us out for weeks and weeks. It's a sickening feeling. The prevent plant of 2013 is in the back of our mind.

Also well documented soil conditions say: don't plant in slabby muck (you idiot), you can't achieve uniform depth and spacing. What is somewhat mystifying is that soil temperature changes the soil's physical characteristics if moisture stays constant (which it doesn't), and we farm over 50 different soil types.

The photos here are probably a good example of what *not* to do, especially knowing ideal conditions arrived while we were still within our planting window.

Authenticity always wins!

Tiny plants, massive potential 🌱 We're thankful for the blessing of a smooth planting season and excited for the season ahead. Now the fields are starting to turn green and a new crop is underway.

My dad, Rod Hanson, Brent Lester and I planted these 50 ash trees in 1989. We paid $14.95 per tree. I was 10. I estimate they grew to 50' tall. Unfortunately, last year, emerald ash borers wiped them out. There's no cure, which means down they went this winter. I think this is a great example of how authenticity always wins because living organisms (crops, animals and plants) are constantly threatened by things outside your control. The plan is to replace them this season. Any suggestions on what we should plant next?

In the spirit of Authenticity Always Wins, here’s this month’s real moment: the Roof Peel.

Growing up in the Midwest, we’re taught that March “comes in like a lion.” Earlier this month proved it. Straight-line winds pushing 70 mph peeled back the roof on one of our swine facilities.

The next morning, the crew was on-site—rolling it back down and driving in new nails for a temporary fix before the next snowstorm hit.

The reality? With today’s sky-high insurance premiums, many of us carry higher deductibles. This one’s on us.

Just another day of adapting, fixing, and moving forward.

The year is 2016 ...

We moved back to the farmhouse and acreage I grew up on. There’s not a square foot of those 10 acres I haven’t touched in every decade of my life.

That fall was also a wet harvest.

I stepped in to run the second auger wagon on the Housh farm. We’d recently expanded our harvest operation, so the second wagon had wheels and tires. The primary wagon was on tracks.

The auger wagon had just been filled. I parked on a sidehill, near the highest point for 10 miles.

Then I watched (in horror) as one tire started to sink slowly and mercilessly.

By the time I got my wits about me, the tractor couldn’t pull it out of the hole. That wagon got stuck the same way more than once that year.

Late that season, we traded into a wagon with tracks. We haven’t looked back!

I recently attended a marketing presentation from Erika Ayers Badan of Barstool Sports. One of the key takeaways is “authenticity always wins.”

That concept aligns with how we operate at Weiland Farms.

In that spirit, we’re launching the “Year of Authenticity” on Weiland Farm’s social media accounts. Each month, we’ll post a real moment from our day-to-day on the farm. Getting stuck, a broken part, a dirty face

To kick it off … here's our corn dryer overflowing, it literally rained corn. 🌽
