I’ve been making homemade detergent for many years. I’ve used different recipes and this is the one I’ve settled with. The quest started over 20 years ago when hubs had a skin rash that wouldn’t go away. There were doctors visits, prescriptions written. No one ever mentioned to swap out your laundry detergent for something less toxic. That one swap fixed the problem. Can I also mention that it’s very cost effective. Please note: I still have to soak the dirtiest greasy grimy things overnight and I use BIZ for that.

Fire cider is our go to for cold and flu season and general well being. Some benefits are as follows :

Supports immune system
Promotes better blood sugar balance
Helps with weight loss
Reduces inflammation
Helps aid digestion
Improves skin heath
Helps with infections
Antioxidant boost

(Based on Ai overview)

How to make it

Fire cider

Start with a glass gallon jar. Add the following:

1 orange sliced with peel
1 whole head of garlic minced
1 large red onion sliced
1 lemon sliced with peel
3 jalapeños sliced
1 Tablespoon pepper corns
1 Tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon cloves
Fresh ginger root peeled and sliced ( it says a handful ?)
1 bunch fresh Rosemary or 1 Tablespoon dried
1 bunch fresh Thyme or 1 Tablespoon dried
1 Tablespoon turmeric
1 cinnamon stick
1 Tablespoon ground horseradish

Cover all with apple cider vinegar. Stir. Place a sheet of parchment paper between the jar and lid (unless you have a plastic lid).

Store on countertop or pantry for 4-6 weeks . Stir daily . Add more apple cider vinegar if needed to keep everything covered . After 4-6 weeks strain and squeeze all you can from the contents. Store in glass jar in refrigerator. Can also sweeten at this point with honey if desired .

Take a Tablespoon each day or 2 -3 times a day if under the weather .

I prefer to add to a glass and fill with cold water with a shake of pink sea salt .

Will keep up to one year, but if the flavor or smell changes or if it gets slimy throw it out .

How do you feel about meatloaf? I’m a fan, but pretty picky about it. I’ve used the same recipe for years and tried a new recipe today. They always get me when the recipe starts with the word “Best”. This recipe got a thumbs up from family.

Best Ever Meatloaf

2 large eggs
2/3 cup milk
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
3 slices bread, crumbled
2 lbs ground beef
1 onion chopped
1 cup shredded cheese
1 carrot chopped
1Tbs brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
2 Tbs yellow mustard

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Whisk eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Stir in breadcrumbs. Mix in ground beef, onion, cheese, carrot and combine.

Transfer to loaf pan.

Mix together ketchup, mustard and brown sugar. Spread over meatloaf.

Bake 60 to 75 minutes until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.

Cooks note: I added one chopped jalapeño to meat mixture for a little extra kick.

Here’s a new recipe to try. It was really good and pretty easy to put together.

Loaded Baked Sweet Potato

Scrub and bake 4 sweet potatoes at 350 degrees until soft.

Meanwhile brown 1 pound hamburger with a chopped onion and 2 cloves garlic pressed.

Add the following:

2 teaspoons chili powder, 2 teaspoons paprika, 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

6 ounce can of tomato paste

4 cups fresh spinach chopped coarsely

Stir and simmer until spinach is wilted down

Salt and pepper to taste

Remove baked sweet potatoes . Split down the middle and mash the inside with a fork.

Top with hamburger mixture. Top with shredded cheese and return to hot oven. Bake until cheese is melted and browned.

Cooks tip: My sweet potatoes were really big so I cut them in half longways and baked them cut side down to reduce baking time.

Homemade apple pie filling! It seriously looks like caramel apples, it’s got to be good.

Mix together

2 cups sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Peel core and slice 6 pounds of apples.

Mix apples with sugar mixture and let it sit until apples get juicy about 30 minutes.

Add all to a stockpot and bring to a simmer. When it starts to thicken, add to clean quart jars. Wipe rims and add hot flats and rings.

Hot water bath for 20 minutes.

Cooks note: I doubled the sugar mixture and filled an 8 quart stockpot with the peeled , cored and sliced apples . It made 6 quarts of pie filling .

Until we eat again! 🍎 🍏 🥧
