Sam is now getting all of his milk from Copper. It is kind of bittersweet but I think it was for the best for them to really bond with each other. They’ve finally claimed each other enough that made me feel comfortable enough to turn them out into a small grass patch that connects to the pens/barn they’ve been in.

They stuck together the whole time and made me happy to watch them. When I went out tonight to feed them and called them up to the barn, Copper wouldn’t leave until Sam got up and headed in as well.

Sam still has a long way to go, but is doing very well! We appreciate everyone who has prayed for him and checked in on him!!

Sam update:
Coppers milk has come in, but I’ve decided to still feed him a bottle 1-2 times a day until he finishes filling back out. He’s started nibbling grain with Copper. He is still the sweetest baby ever, but yesterday he was feeling a little spunky and decided butt scratches tickled a little. I corrected his kicks, but was secretly happy to see them because I have been waiting for him to give me a sign that he was gaining energy. He’s so easy going all of the time it’s hard to tell. We still have a long road ahead of us, but right now, the biggest update I can give is he’s doing fantastic!

I really don’t have much to update on with Sam. Which is terrific! Coppers milk has come in enough for me to put more time in between his bottle feeds. He is putting on weight and filling out tremendously! Copper is still so happy to be his momma and has been a God send for us all involved!

It was a long day, but Copper is now claiming Sam! Sam is still learning that he needs to nurse from Copper, and that she is now his momma and I’m not. I’m still having to supplement him with formula until her milk comes in fully, but we are making sure he latches her before and after each feeding. Copper has been such a sweet mare and such a trooper thru this whole process! We are now home and settled in and have them in a barn with cameras so we can watch them full time without him seeing us. Another thank you to everyone who helped and offered to help us with this process! And a huge thank you to everyone who put us in your prayers! I will still update as I can!

Today has been a whirl wind of emotions for us here at the ranch. We went to check our broodmares and found one of our mares had passed while foaling. Thankfully we were able to find some milk and got the foal to take a bottle. And we had a friend with a mare in milk as well. We are working hard to get them acquainted with one another. Luckily the mare is letting us milk her out into a bottle until they do so. God is so good to allow us to have friends and family that dropped everything to help us out. On my way back to feed him tonight a Megan Moroney song came on the radio and said “life is hard on beautiful things” and that summed up our day perfectly.

Officially on foal watch here at the ranch. Our sorrel mare is really starting to bag up and be more and more uncomfortable each day! Can’t wait to see what they give us this year!
