Let’s take a second to appreciate, in my opinion, the best cow on our place.

218

218 had shown signs of calving during our check that day. We decided to bring her to the house because things didn’t look quite right. We were right and her calf had a leg back and she had lost the calf.

We had a cow that had had twins a couple of days before that and I was raising one on a bottle. 218 wanted to be a momma so bad and had already noticed the calf in the barn before we even pulled her own.

So we pulled her calf, rubbed the after birth on my bottle calf, and they took to each other like a hand and a glove.

Now she is raising a steer, that is not even hers, and he is almost as big as her!

Thankful for cows like 218!

I’ve had to have lots of help in the barn these last 2 weeks. Must be the year for the twins! We’re up to 4 bottle calves! I have 2 free Martin heifers (born to a bull twin, so will likely be sterile) available right now! Both 7-10 days old

Meet 400, or Rosie, as she’s known around the farm! Rosie’s mom passed when Rosie was born.

Jake and I tried to catch her but she ran off. We just knew she would be toast because the likelihood of finding her in the tall grass with no Mom was very slim. We searched and searched and right when we were going to give up and come back later, I spotted her. Jake snuck up behind her while I had her attention and nabbed her!

So we began our bottle feeding journey. A couple of days later she was COVERED in what was essentially “rain rot” from not being cleaned off at birth. We got her healed up and healthy. And here we are 2 years later, and she gave me her first baby!

The cow that made me cry, tested my patience, and made me want to throw in the towel, is also the cow that is showing me, hard work and determination is rewarded!

So, as you meet Rosie, also meet her new heifer, Tulip!
