🌾 National Farm Safety Week – Combustible Grain Dust
If you’ve spent much time around a grain bin, you know dust is just part of the job. But that doesn’t mean we can take it lightly.
Grain dust can be highly combustible. When enough dust gets into the air and meets an ignition source, it can turn into a serious fire or explosion in a hurry.
After years of farming, you learn that a few extra minutes spent cleaning, checking equipment, and fixing a problem before it becomes a bigger one is time well spent.
This week, take a good look around your grain handling areas:
•Keep grain dust cleaned up, especially around motors, bearings, and equipment.
•Watch for hot bearings, slipping belts, electrical problems, and anything that could create a spark.
•Keep ignition sources away from areas where dust can accumulate.
•Don't overlook those hard-to-reach places where dust likes to settle.
•Make sure everyone working around the bins and grain equipment knows what to watch for.
We all want to get the crop in, get it stored, and get home safely. Don't let something as ordinary as grain dust become the thing that brings your operation to a standstill.
Take care of your equipment. Take care of your people. And most importantly, make sure everyone makes it home.
