All domestic breeds of ducks, with the exception of the Muscovy, derive from the wild mallard.
With centuries of selective breeding, these ducks have diverged into dozens of breeds. From those breeds, varieties have been created.
Very similar for chickens as well. Many breeds have the same originating breeds, and new breeds and varieties were created by selective breeding for desired traits.
By establishing a Standard of Perfection for each breed, breeders have a defined goal, and judges have an objective tool to evaluate breed characteristics.
