Iām pretty late in sharing this with yāall but Iām super excited to announce some fantastic news for Freedom Acres. Last spring we were awarded the Farmer Veteran Coalition Fellowship Fund grant to build a high tunnel greenhouse on the farm.
Along with that, Ft. Jacksonās Army Crop of Engineers donated 2 old 300 gallon water blivets that were no longer serviceable for the installation. These blivets will be used to gravity feed water in the high tunnel for our plants and to provide radiant heat to the high tunnel during the winter. And go figure, fast Freddie is still standingš, some will get it!
The high tunnel is a 20x36 High Tunnel Greenhouse from The Green House Company, Jaderlon, here in Columbia. My fellowship fund award paid for the high tunnel, poly cover and a 30% shade cloth. Shade cloth and poly are not pictured, I have them inside until we are ready to install. I will be framing in the ends with one side single entry 36ā door and the other double barn door entry for equipment to enter.
We did the lasagna method of a variety of organic materials at the end of last season to create a new composting soil bed which will be topped off with a custom blend of organic top soil from Earthen Organics in Easley, SC. Our seeds are third generation seeds from the original plants we started with.
None of this wouldāve happened if it wasnāt for the Farmer Veteran Coalition Fellowship Fund Grant. This high tunnel will allow us to grow year around and aid in production of more products out of our delicious, yet super hot, Carolina Reapers!
Huge thanks to the Farmer Veteran Coalition and all of its industry and veteran partners, the SC Chapter of The Farmer Veteran Coalition, Project Victory Gardens, Rutterās Ranch, Matson Consulting, SC Department of Agriculture, ACRE, Certified SC, and everyone else that helped us along the way!!
If your a Veteran in the agricultural industry or looking to start up a farm, the Farmer Veteran Coalition has amazing folks, great resources and industry partners providing outstanding support. The fellowship fund grant application is open, go check it out at https://farmvetco.org/fvfellowship/
