Homesteads for Hope is a nonprofit community farm created with and for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Here, people of all abilities come together to learn, work, and grow as part of a welcoming farm community. Homesteads for Hope was founded in 2013 by a Mother and Daughter team raising a young adult with autism. Today, we are the first intentional agricultural style community. Our stakeholders continue to seek and work towards a sustainable approach to learning, working, living and growing in Western NY. This unique community farm encompasses 55 acres on the beautiful wide water inlet of the Erie Canal. This space offers something for everyone and we encourage all to take part in the evolution. The Farm strives at cultivating effortless inclusion, while fostering independence, promoting individualized skills training, socialization, self-awareness and career exploration on our organically practiced farm. For the future, we continue to craft collaborative partnerships to create the full vision of a sustainable and inclusive agritourism venue. With gracious community support, we are developing enterprises on the farm, including our 2019 Farm Store, a 2020 CSA Food Share and is currently fundraising for a Café & Bakery on the Farm. We made bouquets this week from flowers we picked in the garden and hollowed out pumpkins from the farm, these smiles say it all. 🥰

If you’ve heard the term Self-Direction but aren’t quite sure what it means, this session is a great place to start. Self-Direction is an OPWDD model of service delivery that gives individuals and their chosen supporters a more active role in deciding how authorized services are provided and customized to meet their needs.

This introductory session will walk through the basics of Self-Direction, including who may qualify, who can be part of a person’s Circle of Support, and what types of services and supports may be included in a Self-Directed budget. Participants will also learn how Self-Direction can provide greater flexibility and choice in deciding who provides services, what supports are used, when and where they happen, and how those supports are tailored to the individual.

Whether you’re exploring Self-Direction for the first time, supporting someone who is considering it, or simply want a better understanding of how it works, this session will give you a practical starting point.

What You’ll Learn
-What Self-Direction is and how it works within the OPWDD service system.
-Who may qualify for Self-Direction and what the process involves.
-Who can be part of a participant’s Circle of Support.
-What services and supports may be included in a Self-Directed budget.
-How Self-Direction gives individuals greater choice and flexibility in how their supports are delivered.

Presented by Mary Terry Anzalone and Jodie Carlin:
Mary Terry Anzalone and Jodie Carlin are Self-Direction Liaisons with the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). They will provide an introduction to Self-Direction and help participants better understand the options, supports, and flexibility available through this model of service delivery.

Jackson (our resident farm cat that resides in the house and is treated like royalty) wanted us to remind you that tonight is the penultimate Thursday nights at the farm! - only one more to go after this one, and it’s a BEAUTIFUL October day- come hangout!

We have theneworiginalsroc playing live music (70s and 80s), Army Eats food truck, Kona Ice and Tom’s Coffee. Tractor Beverage Co. will be here again sharing their beverages with everyone that swings through- 10/10. We have vendors, and our farm market (filled with pumpkins, squash, and so many other organically grown goodies), NEW SWAG IN THE STORE- which is open til 8pm! Oh oh, AND we have a farm tasting of maple herb roasted squash that we made fresh today.

The event runs from 5-8, with doors opening at 430 for you early birds. We are asking for a 5$ donation to the farm when you enter through the barn 🧡

Meet Kristen!

We’re excited to welcome Kristen to the Homesteads for Hope team as our new Farm Store Associate!

Kristen brings 30 years of experience teaching art, along with a lifelong love of animals, nature, reading, architecture, music, and learning. She grew up in Rush, NY, and has also lived and taught in Virginia and Indiana.

She’s also been involved in animal rescue for more than 20 years, so it’s probably no surprise that animals are a pretty big part of her life. At home, Kristen and her husband have cats, chickens, goldfish, a very large dog named Bridget, and currently a foster cat family!

Kristen says she’s excited to learn more about the farm and the programs at Homesteads, and we’re excited to have her bring her creativity, experience, and easygoing spirit to the team.

Welcome to Homesteads, Kristen! We’re glad you’re here. 💗

We had such a great day today at our Community BBQ- thank you to everyone that came out, laughed, ate some delicious BBQ, danced with us, and supported the farm. When you show up you help build this community stronger. THANK YOU!! Yeeehawww 🤠

Tonight during our Thursdays at the Farm Tractor Beverage Co. will be here giving away free drinks (let’s gooooo), we have live music by The Flowerhead Folks , and Island Wraps™️ will be here with all their delicious food! We have vendors, and our farm market tables, and our farm store open til 8. WHAT A NIGHT!

AND WE HAVE NEW MERCH.

Come down and check it all out- Thursdays go from 5pm-8pm with the doors opening at 4:30! 5$ suggested donation at the door. (no more ponies this season)

Tea, sandwiches, and good company.

Yesterday our Kitchen and Tea groups joined forces for a very fun tea party! We made delicious cucumber sandwiches with cucumbers fresh from the farm, poured ourselves some tea, and settled in for a whole lot of chatting, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company.

Honestly, the sandwiches were delicious, but the company was even better. We fancy ☕️🫖
