Bee rescue attempt. I haven’t had any luck with removing bees from trees successfully. I’m hoping getting these girls back near to the same orientation that they were will work. It was a long, bumpy ride home. I hope their nest wasn’t completely destroyed. At least they won’t be bothering the home owner anymore.

Throwing down some sunflower seeds around the edges of the milkweed plot. The monarchs love our other sunflower patch.

These conditions reminded me of The Grapes of Wrath. We got totally sandblasted, but the plants are in & just in time for a nice rain last night.

The milkweed has been planted. Along with some clover, sunflowers, & buckwheat for cover. We’ll start transplanting some fragrant sumac & other milkweed species that are coming up volunteer around the farm.

I’d love to know what people driving by think about all the landscaping flags. I told JC there’s no way you can see them from the road. Well, I was very wrong 😂

Another 4-H club invited me to present to their group over the weekend. 🍀 I always enjoy talking about bees & 4-H is so nostalgic for me.

My mom put all 5 of us kids through our paces in 4-H. My older siblings went much further than I think my youngest brother won some speech contests, if I remember right - that was back when I was just a tag along, not old enough to be a member myself. My memories of 4-H were of mostly of the animals in the barns & the club meetings where there was a fun craft or new skill to learn. I loved going through the categories ahead of the Canadian County fair to imagine woodworking projects that my dad would help me build. I still have a lamp that he helped me make. We cut out all the wood parts together & sanded & stained them & then we ran the wires - he knew how to do just about anything. The center of that lamp has a glass column that is full of my great grandma’s old buttons, donated by Mom. Mom let me make wax candles & paint things & she taught me how to sew from a pattern (or tried to). I made all kinds of sewing projects - a Carebear tote bag was a favorite. I even made an outfit that I had to wear in a fashion show. I’ll let you imagine how happy I looked in that photo. 😂

I loved looking at the pressed flowers in the horticulture category & the insect collections & just the whole atmosphere. I never really lost my love for crafting & tinkering & the creativity that 4-H inspired - all helpful traits for beekeeping. Driving home on Sunday, I couldn’t help but think how much Mom would’ve liked to hear about my opportunity to be their speaker. She loved 4-H, too.

Let the planting begin! We transplanted some sandhill plums tonight & JC is going to plant some clover, buckwheat & sunflowers soon. Then the star of the show, green antelopehorn milkweed, should arrive later in the week! We’re also going to plant about 50 Liatris bulbs kindly donated by our friend, Dave Lindo, who has a flower farm & heard about our monarch project.
