These girls(Perkins and Chris) are almost 18 months old. We have decided they are the right temperament and confirmation for our farm and will remain on the farm and hopefully will give us many calves over the coming years.

I am sure you have all read that the U.S. beef herd is at its lowest level in over 50 years. Mostly due to extended droughts out west. It will take a long time to recover. Using our small herd as an example. We don't breed our heifers until they are at least 2 years old. Then another 9 months until she calves. Then another 18 - 22 months until that calf is ready to go to the butcher. If the farmer/rancher raises their own replacement heifers it takes over 4 years from the time they make the decision to replace a cow or expand their herd until you will have a steak or hamburger on your plate. 4 years of work and expenses with no return. Beef is relatively expensive, but ask yourself if you are willing to work for 4 years with no income in the hopes that young heifer will be healthy, get bred, deliver a healthy calf and that calf will also be born healthy and grow to a 1200 lbs steer.

We love our cows and farming and just wanted to give a little insight for those removed from farming and ranching.

We have over 200 new followers to our page since I shared the origins of our farm name.

We get asked often about the name and spelling of our farm. The farm was named after Cindy's dressage, eventing, trail riding, hunter-jumper horse Bobby (Show name - Contraban). Bobby was a thoroughbred who came from a timber racing farm that went bankrupt and abandoned their horses. He was rescued as a yearling and rehabbed at the Ohio State equine center. A friend notified Cindy and she was able to adopt him (she was 13 and he was 17months old). Bobby was her life for the next 25 years until a severe case of founder required us to put him to rest. In honor of the special horse that everyone loved....now you know the rest of the story.

We got our lamb meat back from the butcher and it looks great! Heather-Leon Forystek thank you for the purchase of the second lamb and your support of veteran owned farms. This will probably be our one and only shot at raising sheep, our infrastructure just isn't set up for small ruminants and would require a significant investment...and no offense to the sheep herders out there, but sheep are pretty dumb animals. We prefer cattle, but who knows what the future has in store.

Green peppers are late this year, but we have a ton. Whether you want some for salads, stuffed peppers, pepper soup, or whatever you plan to do with them . We also have sweet banana peppers. They are not large enough to stuff but are perfect for pickling or fresh on salads! Message the farm to place an order for a couple at 3 for $1 or $1.50/lbs in bulk.
