We've been quiet lately, but things have been interesting! We started with three does each having boy-girl twins in late January. Three weeks later, we had a single doeling born on one of the coldest days of the year, when it was about 4 degrees outside. Many Kikos across the country don't bat an eye at those temperatures, but our setup here in central Texas is designed to shed our extreme summer heat, not to keep heat in. Even though her dam had her clean and dry and was working hard to get her to nurse, it was just too cold. Happily, we were able to get her warmed up inside and her dam cooperated on the milking stand. Baby goat lived inside for a few days with meals provided by her dam through a bottle, then when the weather went back to normal we were able to reunite the two of them. And last week we welcomed our last two kids of the year, another pair of boy-girl twins. Everyone is healthy and thriving, and we're pleased with a successful kidding season.
Last year we sold some does we decided weren't a good fit for our breeding program. This year, we plan to hold onto our doelings, evaluate them as they grow, and decide who to keep as replacements. We're monitoring the growth and performance of our bucklings, and they'll be for sale or off to market depending on what we see. We have one friendly, sweet-tempered buckling who might make a good wether/companion goat. If you have an interest in bucklings, let us know and we'll keep you in the loop. As for doelings, none will be for sale this year but next year we expect to have yearling does and/or mature does available.
