Another day working on our wildlife management plan! For all of 2024, we left the east pasture ungrazed. One thing that accomplished was to allow the growth of some young trees to the point that we can identify them. Toward the end of the year, we identified four individual saplings of desirable species (native, not invasive chinaberry) located throughout the area. Today we installed protective cages around them so that we can begin to let the goats back into this pasture and close off the next pasture for 2025 and repeat the process.

New year, new goals! We have applied to designate our property as being used for wildlife management, specifically for songbirds. That includes things like installing nestboxes (this one is designed for Eastern Bluebirds), creating brushpiles, reseeding our pastures with native seed mixes, and working to eradicate invasive species including chinaberry trees and those dang fire ants. We'll still keep a few goats for brush control. Looking forward to seeing the results of these efforts in the years to come!

It's been a whirlwind few days -- kidding season started last Friday and ended yesterday. Talk about efficient! We'll be monitoring all of these as they grow and updating for potential buyers. Captions with each picture indicate the dams and the gender of each kid.

The sire of all this year's kids is SEV Powder Keg's D'Artagnan. We're looking to get good growth from his kids. D'Artagnan's sire, DDF Powder Keg, was number six out of over 100 bucks for average daily gain at the Langston buck test in 2019. D'Artagnan was a fast grower himself, weighing in at about 39 lbs at two months.

SEV Powder Keg's D'Artagnan checking out the brush along the fence. He and his buddy, Wingman, usually stay in our front pasture. We have some fence work to do up there, so we've moved them to another pasture for the time being. They'll be eating well in here!

On the left is SEV Powder Keg's D'Artagnan, our future herdsire. At 15 weeks he's almost as big as yearling doe SEV Butterkrust, on the right! We weren't planning to pick up a doe this weekend, but Butterkrust is a daughter of ROC Ozymandias. Our other Ozy daughter, SEV Glad Tidings, has the best FAMACHA scores in the herd every time. We couldn't resist the opportunity to add her half- sister to our herd!

Here's a solid 2022 update! We've decided to focus on our Kiko goat herd, and are no longer raising cows or rabbits. As we've sold our other livestock we've also taken some time to build our herd, retaining quality doelings from our herdsire, DHS Spotacus. Over the years we had Spots we loved what we saw, which was a zero-maintenance goat who consistently sired healthy, fast-growing kids. Spots has now moved to a new herd nearby and we've purchased a new herdsire, SEV Powder Keg's D'Artagnan. Exciting things are coming! Here are a few photos of this year's kids, our last crop from DHS Spotacus, as well as our yearling does.

We've been quiet lately, but things have been interesting! We started with three does each having boy-girl twins in late January. Three weeks later, we had a single doeling born on one of the coldest days of the year, when it was about 4 degrees outside. Many Kikos across the country don't bat an eye at those temperatures, but our setup here in central Texas is designed to shed our extreme summer heat, not to keep heat in. Even though her dam had her clean and dry and was working hard to get her to nurse, it was just too cold. Happily, we were able to get her warmed up inside and her dam cooperated on the milking stand. Baby goat lived inside for a few days with meals provided by her dam through a bottle, then when the weather went back to normal we were able to reunite the two of them. And last week we welcomed our last two kids of the year, another pair of boy-girl twins. Everyone is healthy and thriving, and we're pleased with a successful kidding season.
Last year we sold some does we decided weren't a good fit for our breeding program. This year, we plan to hold onto our doelings, evaluate them as they grow, and decide who to keep as replacements. We're monitoring the growth and performance of our bucklings, and they'll be for sale or off to market depending on what we see. We have one friendly, sweet-tempered buckling who might make a good wether/companion goat. If you have an interest in bucklings, let us know and we'll keep you in the loop. As for doelings, none will be for sale this year but next year we expect to have yearling does and/or mature does available.

It's that time of year! Three of our does have kidded and we're expecting one more in the next week or two. So far we have three sets of boy-girl twins from SEV Glad Tidings (Joy), Vanilla Cupcake, and SEV Steel Magnolia (Maggie). We're excited to see how these babies grow!

This is charming Billy. (In keeping with our folk song theme: "Oh, where have you been, Billy boy, Billy boy? Oh, where have you been, charming Billy?") He was weaned earlier this month and moved into the buck pasture with the big guys. We'd like to see how his growth continues, but so far he's been promising. One of a set of twin bucklings, he was 50.4 lbs at three months, with an average daily gain of .48 lbs. He's also sweet as can be!
Billy Boy looks white, but he has cream-colored patches that will probably darken a little as he ages, just like his dam. Speaking of his dam, SEV Glad Tidings ("Joy") is one of my favorites because every time I do FAMACHA checks her eye membranes are red as red can be. She was a first freshener this year and turned out to be a terrific mother.

This is Little Liza Jane. In case the ears didn't give it away, her dam is our LaMancha milk goat.
