A wise person told me not too long ago that you never know what is happening in someone's life. Little did I know that I was going to be one of those people that puts on a brave face to everyone I encounter outside of my own family.
It's been almost a week since I saw my friend. Hobbes always brought joy whenever I was around him. If I had a bad day, Hobbes could bring cheer to my face. If I needed a hug, Hobbes was there. Hobbes always greeted me with a smile. Hobbes was the definition of true love, and he was my dog.
I've been around dogs. I've had dogs in my family before. Hobbes was the first dog that I had been around since he was a puppy. This was a dog that I could say was mine. Polly will say that Hobbes saw her as the Alpha Dog, and that's fine by me. Hobbes had enough love to go around for me and Teddy too. It was impossible to give Hobbes too much love. He'd absorb every hug, let you pet him for hours, and he'd keep coming back for more. If you sat down, he'd either be at your feet or near your lap. If you were lucky, he would just lay across you. I can't count how many times I was able to take a great nap because I had Hobbes acting as a living blanket.
Hobbes was a pandemic puppy. While my family was stuck at home, I was considered an essential worker as a banker. Hobbes kept Polly and Teddy company while I was at work. Of course during the pandemic people weren't getting together too much. That meant that Hobbes never got to be around other dogs or anyone else for that matter. He had a strong distrust for other animals, and he didn't always warm up immediately to adults. Children? Hobbes loved every child he ever met. I remember him being so gentle with babies, toddlers, and even older kids. Adult friends would get barks until Hobbes could get used to them. Then he wouldn't leave friends alone. He wanted constant cuddles and attention. When we had professionals working on our house, Hobbes could be trusted to let them do their jobs without eating them.
Hobbes was so great with Teddy. Teddy didn't like him at first due to his sharp puppy teeth and nails. Teddy got over that quickly when he found out how fun having a dog could be. Hobbes put up with Teddy when he seemed to have all the energy in the world as a preschooler. As Teddy got older, Hobbes loved to wrestle, dance, and play with balls or balloons with Teddy. Thankfully I have lots of pictures of Teddy just laying on Hobbes, as Hobbes never got upset about that. I never had to worry about Hobbes hurting Teddy which was a great thing as a dad who has too many helicopter tendencies.
Did anything annoy me about Hobbes? Yes, but right now those all seem amazingly stupid. I remember I would play fetch with Hobbes until I got distracted by a tv or a phone. Or the ball would get too wet from dog slobber. Hobbes would rarely tire of playing fetch, and now I wish I could play with him just one more time.
I miss locking with his dark black eyes while i would rub behind his ears. Hobbes would just stare back at me almost like he was thankful for the attention. Normally he would be sitting up while I did this, and it always ended with me getting down on a knee to hug him. He'd let me hug him for as long as I wanted to.
I miss the greetings. I miss waking up sweaty because Hobbes decided to lay across my legs. I miss him reminding me when it was time to feed him. I miss seeing him get on his hind legs wrestling with Teddy. I miss the admiring looks he would give Polly while she was brushing him.
Hobbes was ripped away from us. One night I noticed he had a slight limp with his back leg. It was odd enough that it appeared it caused him so much pain that he just laid down in the back yard. This was strange for a dog that would come leaping when he was called. Polly decided to take him to the vet the next morning. Then we found out he had fluid around his lungs and heart. Apparently he had an undetected tumor that burst on his heart. We were told most owners never notice a difference until their dog passes. We caught it quickly which didn't help at all. Hobbes passed the next morning. We could not have done anything better for him. His blood tests were healthy. This was just an awful disease that took him from us.
I'm not one of those people who knows exactly how old their dog is/was. In my mind, Hobbes was 6. He could have been 7. Either way, it's way too early for a dog to die.
It's not fair. It hurts. We have a hole in our family where Hobbes used to be. My wife is a saint who has adopted many senior dogs from the Humane Society. I understand now how she had to take a break from that, as missing a dog stinks.
Will we get another dog? Undoubtedly. I also no doubt that any dog could be as good as Hobbes. I know this is a phrase you hear all the time, but Hobbes was the best boy. I can't think of a better compliment for a dog. Actually, yes I can. Hobbes was love. He will also have a place forever in my heart. Hobbes I miss you.
