Flower Alley gelding wins Pocket Power Stakes
Wilgerbosdrift’s evergreen sire Flower Alley enjoyed feature race success at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday.
His son Otto Luyken showed tremendous courage to win the Listed Pocket Power Stakes (1950m) on Sunday.
In landing Sunday’s Listed feature, Otto Luyken, who had finished fourth in the 2024 Pocket Power Stakes, became his G1 Travers Stakes winning sire’s 39th stakes winner.
Hailing from the Crawford yard, five-year-old Otto Luyken was given a superb ride by Luyolo Mxothwa to land Sunday’s R350 000 contest.
Mxothwa bought his mount with a perfectly timed challenge which saw Otto Luyken just get up to beat favourite Garrix by a short-head.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Otto Luyken has won four of 26 outings for R691 224.
Otto Luyken, who had finished runner up in the G3 Legal Eagle Stakes prior to his latest win, is out of the Ideal World mare Laurel Cherry.
His sire Flower Alley has had another good season in 2024-2025 with the son of Distorted Humor also responsible for this season’s Listed Betway Algoa Cup winner Firealley and Listed Allied Steelrode Golden Loom Handicap hero Chyavana.
Famed as the sire of both G1 Kentucky Derby winning champion I’ll Have Another and South African Horse Of The Year Princess Calla, Flower Alley has sired more than 500 winners and his offspring have earned in excess of $48 000 000 in prize money.

Fifth G1 win for Flower Alley star
Wilgerbosdrift’s highly successful stallion Flower Alley is the sire of South Africa’s reigning Horse Of The Year Princess Calla.
The latter picked up the fifth G1 win of her illustrious career when storming home to claim the G1 City Of Cape Town Majorca Stakes (1600m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
Princess Calla, who ran third in the 2022 Majorca Stakes, has now won 12 of 26 starts with the champion daughter of Flower Alley having amassed more than R5.43 million in prize money.

Trained by Sean Tarry, six-year-old Princess Calla was winning for the first time this season on Saturday, with the champion having kicked off her campaign with a second place finish over 1250m, before finishing fourth in the G2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes and second in the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes.

Regular rider Richard Fourie gave Princess Calla the perfect ride on Saturday, with Fourie bringing his mount with a strong run down the outside of the track with the pair powering home to score an emphatic three-and-a-quarter length win.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Princess Calla is out of the Captain Al mare Princess Royal.

The mare, who was also named Equus Champion Older Female of 2022-2023, had previously won the 2022 G1HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes, 2023 G1 South African Fillies Sprint, 2023 G1 Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes and G1 The HKJC Champions Cup.

Princess Calla is one of more than 30 stakes winners for Flower Alley, whose progeny have earned more than $47 million in prize money.
