Can you find the queen? See the last photo to see where she’s hiding!
It’s queen caging season for FL beekeepers! Each box contains 3 “mini hives” of just 3 frames called a nucleus hive. That means that each box contains 3 potential queens for us to find, mark, and cage. One day after the queen is caged, we place a new queen cell (see photo) in the hive where she will hatch within the next day or two. Her job will then be to fly out, mate, and return as a well mated and established queen. We will return to these hives in about 21 days and the cycle will repeat.

Grafting honey bee larvae into cell cups. The first step in raising queens! Did you know the only difference between a worker bee and a queen bee is their diet? Each larvae is resting on a bed of royal jelly which adds the lubricant we need to slide her from the cell on the frame to the blue cell cup on the bar. The larvae is then fed by the nurse bees exclusively royal jelly, a royal diet fed only to queens.

Ever wonder how a honeybee is born? She spent her whole life in that cell so far. From egg to larvae to pupae. And now she emerges as a fully formed worker bee. Her first job in the hive will be to take care of all those who are younger than her. She is what we call a “nurse bee”. From egg to pupae, she feeds the others until they are capped (cocooned) where they are awaiting their turn to emerge from their cell.
No one needs to tell them their role in the hive. They instinctively know their jobs. She will remain a nurse bee until she graduates to her next job, foraging.

We wrapped up our honey extraction season on October 1st. Two weeks later, we sent down the first load of bees. The migration has begun!

While the crop may not have been what we had hoped, we know the Lord of the harvest, and He provides all our needs. The rain falls on the just and the unjust and He gives us just what we need.
