A special flag of 35 stars flies in front of the G.A.R. Hall today. Let’s flashback to July 4, 1863. The battle is over. For the military, what about Lee? For the town’s citizens, a massive effort lay ahead to recover from the carnage of the past three days. But for West Virginia (WV), it is a special day when a new U.S. flag flies at the WV and U.S. Capitals. It has 35 stars to recognize West Virginia’s admittance as the newest state in the Union. WV was actually admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863. But according to 4 USC §2 (our Flag code), the flag with the new state’s star added cannot be flown until the July 4th following admittance. So today a shout-out to West Virginia as we fly a 35 star flag to mark the 162th anniversary of its first being flown!

Save the date! HGAC's 17th Annual three-day BarnArt Show & Sale will hold Opening Night on Friday, June 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the historic GAR Hall, 53 E. Middle Street in Gettysburg PA. Hours Saturday, June 14 will be 10 am to 6 pm and hours on Sunday, June 15 are noon to 4 pm -- all shows free and open to the public! Fifty artists will be showing more than 100 works of art, all depicting a barn or a feature of a barn. Hope to see you there!
