With hearts full of gratitude, we extend our deepest thanks to everyone who helped make Light Up the Night such an extraordinary evening. 💜✨✨

What unfolded was far more than a benefit concert. It was a powerful expression of community. From months of planning and weekly meetings to countless hours of volunteer labor, donations of food and drink, behind-the-scenes coordination, and generous gifts of time, talent, and resources, this event was built by many hands and carried by a shared commitment to our school and its future.

We are deeply grateful to our parent and student volunteers, business sponsors, donors, and supporters. Special thanks go to the remarkable musicians who donated their artistry: Melissa Auf der Maur, Juliette Commagere, Joachim Cooder, Ry Cooder, Aaron Dessner, Gail Ann Dorsey, Ben and Nini Gebert (HAERTS), Rachel Loshak and all of our amazing student musicians – and to Walton Goggins for lending his presence and support (and voice!) to the evening. We are also especially thankful to Basilica Hudson for generously providing their beautiful space and making an enormous contribution to the success of the event.
👏👏👏👏

The results were bountiful, not only in the funds raised, which will directly support our work, but in the spirit of goodwill, generosity, and connection that filled the room. Light Up the Night reminded us what is possible when a community comes together around a shared purpose.

Thank you for helping us create a night that will be remembered for years to come.💫

Sharing scenes from the first month of grass season at the farm. 🌤️ There’s really nothing better than seeing the herd enjoying lush pastures and each other’s company. Keeping cows primarily on pasture supports rumen health and natural foraging behavior, improves hoof and coat condition, and often brings more nuanced flavor to the milk. We manage diverse forage and careful rotations so each animal gets balanced nutrition from the land. That’s better for the herd, better for the farm, and better for you if you enjoy our dairy products!🌿✨

It is the season of Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi), again! This delightful relative of carnations is currently gracing the roadsides here at Hawthorne Valley. Each of its five pink petals is deeply divided into four narrow lobes, which sparkle with dewdrops in the morning light. ✨ In its native range in Europe it currently flowers, together with Oxeye Daisy, Red Clover, and Tall Buttercup in lightly-managed (not overfertilized) hayfields. In Germany, we call it “Kuckuck’s Lichtnelke” (=”cockoo’s carnation of light”). It flowers at the same time when one can hear the first calls of the cockoos who have returned from their winter home in Africa.

Have you noticed a flash of red in your peripheral vision while driving on the Taconic Parkway when you pass rock outcrops? You might be seeing the blooms of Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis). At Hawthorne Valley, we have seen them on rock outrcops in the forest on Phudd Hill. Red Columbine is a great native plant addition to gardens and attracts Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, which serve as pollinators for this species.

Our Farm Store carries Red Columbine plants from if you’re interested in planting some in your garden or yard. 🪏

✨ Artist Spotlight and some VERY EXCITING NEWS ✨

We are beyond thrilled that the incredible will be performing at our upcoming Light Up the Night benefit concert on Saturday, May 30 at The very exciting news is that he won’t be alone (read on).

Joachim is a genre-defying percussionist, composer, and producer whose instrument of choice is the electric mbira — a variation on the African thumb piano — which he uses to conjure what listeners describe as “otherworldly” and deeply dreamy soundscapes. He has performed on landmark recordings including the legendary Buena Vista Social Club sessions and has collaborated with artists ranging from Mavis Staples and Dr. John to Ali Farka Touré. His Nonesuch debut, Over That Road I’m Bound, is a beautifully inventive reimagining of early American folk songs.

We’re thrilled to announce that joining Joachim on stage will be two very special guests NOT on our official lineup: his father, the legendary guitarist and composer , one of the most celebrated roots musicians of our time and the visionary behind the Buena Vista Social Club project; and his wife, the mesmerizing singer-songwriter , whose lush, soulful voice has captivated audiences around the world.

A family on stage together, making music they love for a cause that matters. We can’t think of a better way to Light Up the Night. 🌟

Hawthorne Valley's vegetable farmers Todd and Tessa warmly invite you to join them for a Farm Tour tomorrow, May 22 at 8:15am.

Whether you've already signed up for the season or are considering purchasing a CSA share, this is a great opportunity to see the fields and greenhouses where vegetables are already growing in anticipation of our first harvest (coming in early June!), have your questions about biodynamic growing practices and the CSA model answered, and get to know our farmers.

Meet in front of Hawthorne Valley Farm Store to begin the tour. We look forward to seeing you!

Tree Swallows dive through the air, catching and eating a variety of flying insects like flies and mosquitos. 🦟 Because of this, farmers put out pairs of nest boxes for them and bluebirds, to encourage their establishment in open fields near livestock or crops. 🪺 Tree Swallows are territorial, so they won’t nest in a box next to another pair, so putting out two boxes makes room for bluebirds in case the Tree Swallows move in. There are other birds who will also take advantage of bird boxes, like House Wrens, or the invasive House Sparrow.

CSA Season Starts in June — Sign Up Now! 🍓
Have grocery prices got you cringing at the checkout? Here’s a better way to eat this summer.🌞

Hawthorne Valley Farm’s CSA distributions begin in early June, and there’s still time to lock in your share. With 25 weeks of fresh produce — one of the longest seasons of any farm in the region — you’re getting real value from early summer all the way into fall.

Every vegetable we grow is certified organic or Biodynamic®, and raised without synthetic pesticides or GMOs. That means you’re getting more than 40 varieties of nutrient-dense, seasonal vegetables harvested at peak ripeness. That means the freshest food you can get short of growing it yourself.

Why join?

✅ Beat inflation. Lock in your produce costs for the season at a predictable price, no matter what happens at the grocery store.

✅ Flexible options. Choose from full or partial shares, with multiple payment options to fit your budget. We want to work with you to make sure you can access this incredible produce - email us at [email protected] to learn more about our payment plans, SNAP eligibility, and needs-based discounts!!

✅ More than vegetables. Add-on shares are available for fruit (from neighboring farms), eggs, meat, dairy, bread, and more.

✅ Convenient pickup. Collect your share on the farm in Ghent, or at pickup sites in Riverdale, Inwood, Garden City, and NYC Greenmarkets including Union Square, 82nd Street, and Columbia.

💚 Community. CSA members are invited to on-farm celebrations that connect you to the land and the people who grow your food.

Joining our CSA means directly supporting a Demeter-certified Biodynamic farm, and a whole network of like-minded regional growers, in their work to build healthier soil, cleaner water, and a more resilient food system. 💫
