A pelican was filmed taking a live octopus from an aquarium display. Everyone assumed the bird had simply found itself an easy meal. But another camera captured something nobody expected.
It had happened several times that week. The pelican would approach an open aquarium exhibit, grab an animal with its long beak, and quickly fly away.
During the latest incident, a visitor recorded the entire thing. The bird reached into the water, lifted an octopus from the display, and disappeared toward the nearby pier.
At first, there seemed to be nothing unusual about it.
Pelicans eat animals. So naturally, people assumed the octopus had become lunch.
Then pier security footage told a completely different story.
The camera showed what appeared to be the same pelican landing above the ocean. Moments later, it lowered its beak toward the water and released a live octopus back into the sea.
When the two videos were compared, the pelican appeared to match.
Suddenly, what looked like simple food theft became a strange mystery.
Why would a pelican take an octopus from an aquarium only to release it into the ocean?
What happened to the other animals it had taken earlier that week?
Were they eaten? Released somewhere else? Or did something completely different happen?
There are no clear answers.
The footage only shows one remarkable sequence: a pelican taking an octopus from an aquarium and, at least once, returning one alive to the ocean.
Sometimes wildlife footage doesn't give us answers.
It gives us even more questions. 🐙🦤🌊
