Busy last couple of weeks here on the farm. Started off right away on the 14th with Milk-N-More Farms and Harvesting chopping and filling the silage bag for the winter. While that was going on we sorted cows from calves and officially started the weaning process. A week later after most of the crying was over we kicked the cows back onto pasture for what we’re hoping is a month or more, this warm month and rain early on helped regenerate the grass and cut down on our hay usage. This morning we worked calves through the chute for their second round of vaccine and kicked them out to pasture for the next month. Another great group of calves raised by the cows this year with almost ideal growing conditions will have us set up good for winter.
In a month or so we’ll sort heifer calves from the bull calves and pick the ones we want to keep for replacement heifers and yearling bulls. The rest of the heifers will be sold and the bull calves we don’t want to keep for breeding will be banded and put into our finishing pen for beef next summer.
