Quick update from Brynn….

This week we took a trip to Side Hill Acres in Candor, NY, to stock some highly requested goat cheese.

Brynn came along for the trip and walked in and told me to make sure we got that blue and pink fruit dip.. I said yes Brynn in the big box we have the fruit dip 👍

⏰ ⏰ Before the clock runs out on this here’s a quick story to share…if you’ve got the time:

- It was three years ago today when we sat down to sign the papers. ✍️ At our lawyer’s office, we were the last in-person meeting he would have for awhile. It was March 16, 2020, after all, and I remember sitting in the car there with Liz. “We really gonna do this?”

With the whole world shutting down? An old bingo hall? (+ church?!) Let’s just say, we knew about ’em, so we forged ahead (or foraged?) and here we are today, three years later… still kinda just getting started.

That’s what we do, though. We start small and stay patient. We set up tents in the front yard at first, invite our friends over, hold mini farmers markets once in a while. Modest, as we feel things out. That was different terrain then. I mean, we were still wearing masks outside 🤣🤣

That first year, we hosted a handful of “open houses,” and I remember at one of the first, we estimated 100 people swung through. On the Berwick Turnpike?! We were floored. …even if most of you were just checking into see what kind of mushrooms we were actually growing 😉

It wasn’t till August of the following year when the yellow doors of this store opened on a daily basis. Still, though, we are just getting things up and running. So it seems.

We do get tons of help from so many. You’ll find my mom here running the cash register some days. Dad usually has a greenhouse or two full of tomatoes in the summertime. Siblings are always eager to offer a helping hand, even bunk up for a summer. Colin helps keep this kitchen runnning. Certainly, we didn’t get here just ourselves. SueSue, Aunt Mary we need a babysitter!

But when we were parking the car that Monday morning, March 16, just Liz and I … when everything else seemed to be hitting the fan… this is what seemed right

What a great way to try all three of our mushrooms that we grow here — (L to R) blue oysters, lions mane and shiitake! Cook them each separately or toss them all in a greased sauté pan together for a nice mushroom medley 🎻 **Salt at the end**

🍄🪵 Let’s talk mushrooms 🪵🍄

As you might see in these photos, we are starting to farm shiitakes two different ways, because, well, we need keep up with demand in 2023! So here’s a little update, if you’ve got the time:

As many know, we have been growing mushrooms for more than seven years. Shiitake mushrooms are kinda our thing! We inoculated our first logs in the fall of 2015 as part of a farming class through Cornell Co-Op Extension. Initially the shiitake logs grew outside in a creek basin. Then in 2020, we moved them inside this old bingo hall where our kitchen+shop now call home. We mimic their natural habitat indoors and we now are able to grow *almost* year around. Limitations still exist, though.

Fast forward to now, and there’s only so much time/space for these logs to continue keeping up with what we need from them. So in order boost production this year, we are turning to our guy Kyle at Ten Mile Mushrooms for some asssitance! ”Grow Mush More” is his slogan and that’s exactly what we are trying to do.

The crew at Ten Mile introduce the mushroom spawn into blocks made of *certified organic* sawdust. They do all this in an expanding mushroom lab/building just about 2hrs south of us in Pennsylvania. We’ve worked with them for the past few years with our lions mane and oyster mushrooms, and now we are adding shiitake blocks to our regular shipment. Yes, of course we still grow shiitakes on hardwood logs, like it has been done in parts of this world for centuries. But by also growing them on compacted sawdust blocks, like seen in the pictures below, we are able to increase our production efficiency per square foot, while still producing the quality of mushroom that we’ve all come to expect. Just a note for you! Keep on growin

Bespoke Herbalist at DDF
We are stocked 😊. We will be sampling switchel this weekend for anyone that is curious about trying this delightful drink and herbal remedy.

Switchel is a household staple along with basically everything else on our shelves.

I am happy to answer questions about my personal experience with all these great items and also forward any questions I do not know the answer to our neighborhood herbalists.

🥕The first food for both our girls 🥕

Planted by Tim to ensure that in January of 2019 we had carrots in our hoop house for Brynn to eat when 6 months rolled around for her. This summer the same thought was put into place for Arborie’s first eats 👏

The carrots have been harvested and stored for some time but yesterday and today we cooked them and Arborie enjoyed her first food from the farm.

Farm first- it’s one of the best parts of our story. Having the opportunity to bring these girls into a world of growing their own food is something more wild than I could have ever dreamed.

The carrots were just the beginning for Brynn and same for Brie. ❤️

Well, hello there...

Tim and Liz Owen, here – aka Growen Food, and this is gonna be our story of putting good in, getting good out on our family land in the hills of northern tier Pennsylvania. Follow along as we share pictures, video and updates from the farm and be the first to join our Growen community.

We have been gradually getting back into this farming thing for a few seasons now, on the property where Tim grew up and in the pastures where herds of beef cows grazed a couple decades ago. Maintaining the soil health as a top priority, we’re an organically-minded market garden located in north Bradford County. In addition to our evolving variety of vegetables, Growen’s specialty crop is gourmet mushrooms.

Seasonally, we cultivate shiitakes outdoors on hardwood logs, and we also grow a couple different species of oysters in a climate-controlled indoor environment. Our mushrooms are a delicious complement to our table of fresh greens, root veggies, tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and more.

Each Friday until mid-October, we bring a selection of our harvest down to the Sayre (Pa.) Farmers Market at Elmer Park. Different vegetables may come and go with the time of the season, but our aim is to always have some mushrooms on the stand. If you’re unable to come see us in the park, we’re also available on the website Delivered Fresh, a service that provides weekly drop-offs at locations in Sayre, Troy, Wellsboro, Monroeton, Mansfield and East Smithfield. https://deliveredfresh.localfoodmarketplace.com/Producer/942dc849-6454-4a64-a6c7-15400b5a7363

Headed into the oven for our new veggie wraps! Thanks Growen Food for the beautiful mushrooms!
It’s been quite hectic at the shop since the weather has warmed up! Here are a couple of signs that had been in the works for quite some time and now since all three have been hung, it’s time to share them! All the signs were designed and cut by DePue Welding (which are probably some of the easiest people to work with…they started cutting “layered” signs which add a 3D look to them and makes my job a whole lot easier for multi colors). Seneca Sunrise Coffeesign is the first powdercoat fade I’ve done in years and I don’t think we could have gotten any luckier with matching the colors in their logo. The second sign for Growen Food at Bentley Creek Gardens was fun to do because I’ve been friends with the owner since we were kids, the third sign El Rancho Mexican Restaurant & Grillwas interesting because the powder used is a “grip like” rubber powdercoat which I’ve never used before, and yes there is rubber in the coating because my shop smelled like a burnout competition while the sign baked in the oven! The best part of all 3 signs is that every business is a small business, not some big corporation!
Home game for our instructional team tonight! Come have a hot dog, some nachos, or some pizza from Growen Food at Bentley Creek Gardens and cheer on our kids.
