🍕 🍕 Cooking with Liz! 🍕 🍕

Let’s keep it real! We started this business out as a veggie+mushroom farm. And we continue to be. But do you want to know our best way to get our friends, family and neighbors to eat more veggies+mushrooms? By putting them on a pizza 😂 😂 Obviously!

Peppers and onions ✅
Mushrooms ✅
Spinach ✅
Garlic ✅ 💯
**Grab a bag of our lettuce before you go, too!

But… every now and then… it is hard to beat a traditional pepperoni, red sauce on a NY style crust from this Brooklyn girl

Ever want to check if there are robots on social media? Try making a Facebook post about mushrooms 😂😂

Here’s some of our shiitake harvest from today in the photo below. We’ve been growing mushrooms since 2016 and now that we have our own store/kitchen we cook them up on the regular. We top them on our hand-stretched pizzas or we’ll stuff a fresh roll with them, smother them with melted cheese, and call them a “shii” steak sandwich!

But! Every time recently that we try posting about this deliciousness, our Facebook posts gets bombarded with comments from random accounts posting about diff species that we don’t grow here. We love all mushrooms but we primarily only grow three in-house. We’ll save the others for the other guys.

Cue the robot comments, now!

This guy… turned 35 yesterday 🎉🎈🥳

He is so very important around here.
Without Tim we wouldn’t have the garlic, the lettuce, the carrots, the pesto, spinach, celery, beets….

We wouldn’t have the beautiful flowers or the pictures of them

We wouldn’t have mushrooms, or a place to grow them.

We also wouldn’t have pizza because well we had to figure out how to keep this busy guy fed! (Which can most days be a challenge)

He tends to have a vision and *follow through* with it. We are so proud and happy to have him and his faith in planting the seeds.

Even when the seeds don’t grow, he gets up the next day and plants more, then he w**ds them and harvests them, stores them, helps to process them, turn the bed over and plant it again 👨‍🌾👨‍🌾🌾

🧄 🧄 Some days we joke that we should turn this entirely into a garlic farm.

🍕 🍕 Then we cut into a perfectly cured bulb like this or a slice of our original white pizza and we think…hmmm…maybe that’s not much of a joke after all!!

Here, we grow things. Like root veggies, flowers, lettuce and greens!

All that happens outside on about a half acre. Then we try to keep growing what we can well into the winter, so in many ways we are just getting started. Indoors, we grow delicious lions mane, oysters and shiitakes, too!

Here, we also cook things. Because, of course, we have that kitchen in there, offering just a few food items, done in a way unlike many places else 😉

Hard to beat a crisp foggy morning like today’s. Autumn is in the air and that’s when I start to love these gardens again 😂

Plan a trip for a garden walk like this one in the video to see these beds in full expression! Won’t be long before the cold weather takes them away from us for another season. For now, enjoying it all while it’s here

It’s the time of year the gardens start giving out some sweet items to put on top of your pizzas. All in time for us to have a great mushroom harvest come right along to the party.

I only have this one photo that explains it all Bespoke Apothecary Elmira

We thoroughly enjoyed spending the day together as a family listening to music, meeting new folks that made the trip up the hill to experience their wonderful event.
Brynn got her face painted and Arborie wore shoes for the first time and she danced all day to the band!

Grateful to be a part of this community and for people like April and Bill who welcome us to their home to see it all in action.

Looking forward to this Saturday!!

Getting ready to roll for another week here! Harvesting, restocking and organizing the store and managing the gardens this morning.

Before getting to that, how about a quick walkaround and a reflection on where these gardens stand this time of year?

• I love this new door. I love this high tunnel that Ethan has helped me build this past month. Almost done! These zinnias are pretty nice, too.

Otherwise, to be honest, I’m not loving the gardens right now.

That’s pretty typical for me in late-August, though, something that I’ve come to expect of myself this time of year. This is our 8th season after all, so we notice some of the same patterns. Liz likes to remind me of them 😂 The w**d pressure is at its worst; the effects of poor germination rates from the past month of heat take their toll; other plants have overgrown; the harvests are constant; the sunflowers begin their droop; I get run down. It all adds up, but it’s also kinda part of the plan. Time just gets on us so quick —and every year seems quicker— that it’s like whoa, we are here again already.

So what you see in this garden-walk video here, a lot of the vegetation is gone soon. Gotta make way for our fall crops. Since we’ve been growing here at the Bentley Creek Gardens location, we’ve found our fall grow season can be our best. That’s if we are ready for it. That requires us pulling the plug on the summer season before it quite seems like time. It’s fleeting, as I’m sure many of you can relate as you get ready for another (or first) school year. What’s to come, we’ll see. Hopefully it’s better, should be.

This high tunnel should really make a difference for us as the days get shorter. We are only about one month away from cool nights, btw. We’ll get to those when they get here.

That’s enough rambling for this morning; there’s work to do

🚨🚨 Announcement for next Saturday - Aug. 26 🚨🚨

We are all looking forward to the 7th Annual Farm + Apiary Open House at Bespoke Apothecary Elmira next weekend! So much so that whole family wants to go and we can’t agree who is going to run the store. Soooo we will be closing our yellow doors for that day next Saturday only.

I encourage you to come find us up at Bill and April’s place near the Newtown Battlefield across the highway from us. There’s a great lineup and it’s always been a great time.

We will be packing up most of the store with us and taking it up, you never know what we’ll with bring with! Later 😉

08/19/2023

🍾 🗓️ Two years ago! Can you believe it?? 🗓️🍾

Two years ago this week we opened these yellow doors here in Bentley Creek! We’ve done a few things in a short time, and there are many more that we are working to improve. Even though we have started growing a lot more flowers, one thing we need to do more often is to stop and smell the roses. I mean, I almost let this little special occasion come and go without realizing…

I get lost in the day to day too easily; there’s so much to do; so much more that we want to do. There were big plans when we opened this store in 2021, after running the farmers markets four years before that. If you were to forecast to us then what we’ve accomplished now, our accomplishments would probably be ahead of what we once thought was doable. Even still, this landmark to celebrate almost slipped by this week without realizing. Just too many other things! Whether it’s constructing a hoophouse, the relentless summer harvest, upcoming projects, repairs, maintenance… or children… there’s always something new to keep us occupied.

Anymore, we actually don’t find ourselves as fixed on the big, long-term goals like we used to. They all come in time, after all. The process takes over now and we have fallen in love with that. It is a daily grind and we try our best to enjoy the unknown of where it takes us next. Even if some days are more stressful than what we could have ever predicted, looking back at this slideshow, it’s amazing how fast these two years have come and gone.

Thank you for your support and we’ll try celebrating the third a little bit better next year 😉

We will be two places at once tomorrow! Find us in Sayre at Elmer Park for the F3 Fest hosted by The Guthrie Clinic. That’ll be from 10am-2pm. 🎈🎈 Happy Birthday Elizabeth Cleary Owen 🎈🎈

As many of you know, Liz is the heart and soul of the operations around here and she’s the one who keeps this place running like it does. She cooks a pretty mean pizza, and, yeah, she’s a wonderful mom&wife too 🍕😉

You can make her day extra special by swinging by and grabbing lunch/dinner today ( ) and wishing her a HBD in person. Or you can stop by and see her tomorrow at Elmer Park in Sayre. It’ll be our first outside farm market in a long time!

Well, hello there...

Tim and Liz Owen, here – aka Growen Food, and this is gonna be our story of putting good in, getting good out on our family land in the hills of northern tier Pennsylvania. Follow along as we share pictures, video and updates from the farm and be the first to join our Growen community.

We have been gradually getting back into this farming thing for a few seasons now, on the property where Tim grew up and in the pastures where herds of beef cows grazed a couple decades ago. Maintaining the soil health as a top priority, we’re an organically-minded market garden located in north Bradford County. In addition to our evolving variety of vegetables, Growen’s specialty crop is gourmet mushrooms.

Seasonally, we cultivate shiitakes outdoors on hardwood logs, and we also grow a couple different species of oysters in a climate-controlled indoor environment. Our mushrooms are a delicious complement to our table of fresh greens, root veggies, tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers and more.

Each Friday until mid-October, we bring a selection of our harvest down to the Sayre (Pa.) Farmers Market at Elmer Park. Different vegetables may come and go with the time of the season, but our aim is to always have some mushrooms on the stand. If you’re unable to come see us in the park, we’re also available on the website Delivered Fresh, a service that provides weekly drop-offs at locations in Sayre, Troy, Wellsboro, Monroeton, Mansfield and East Smithfield. https://deliveredfresh.localfoodmarketplace.com/Producer/942dc849-6454-4a64-a6c7-15400b5a7363

Headed into the oven for our new veggie wraps! Thanks Growen Food for the beautiful mushrooms!
It’s been quite hectic at the shop since the weather has warmed up! Here are a couple of signs that had been in the works for quite some time and now since all three have been hung, it’s time to share them! All the signs were designed and cut by DePue Welding (which are probably some of the easiest people to work with…they started cutting “layered” signs which add a 3D look to them and makes my job a whole lot easier for multi colors). Seneca Sunrise Coffeesign is the first powdercoat fade I’ve done in years and I don’t think we could have gotten any luckier with matching the colors in their logo. The second sign for Growen Food at Bentley Creek Gardens was fun to do because I’ve been friends with the owner since we were kids, the third sign El Rancho Mexican Restaurant & Grillwas interesting because the powder used is a “grip like” rubber powdercoat which I’ve never used before, and yes there is rubber in the coating because my shop smelled like a burnout competition while the sign baked in the oven! The best part of all 3 signs is that every business is a small business, not some big corporation!
Home game for our instructional team tonight! Come have a hot dog, some nachos, or some pizza from Growen Food at Bentley Creek Gardens and cheer on our kids.
