It has been a very long time since I updated this page and I really need to do it more often... so.............
I want to address something on here.... it has been brought to my attention that a local feed store selling live baby birds is not providing proper care... first thing, coffee grounds for bedding... there is not enough studies done to be able to say that it is safe for baby chicks period! Decaffeinated coffee just truly does not exist, read up on it.. even the Decaffeinated you buy to drink still has caffeine just not as much... people say mixing, key word here, mixing it in with shavings can help to keep smell down in your coop. This is for ADULT BIRDS, not babies.... and this place is putting these babies on straight coffee grounds! If you know ANYTHING AT ALL about baby ducks, geese, chickens and etc.... but especially water fowl then you know that they put everything in their mouths.. now add in the fact that when wet these expand... so.. water fowl use water to help with food digestion so again we are setting these babies up for trouble.... so caffeine poisoning and impacted crops, mouths and etc... and they wonder why they lose them... Then you add in the fact that their bird experts in store are a manager who truly just scooped up a bunch of dying turkeys and threw them in a box to take to the back... lady, they shouldn't have been on the floor for people to see to begin with... they refuse to wait the full 24 hours for them to adjust after traveling in a box for days and then refuse anyone to give input, and I don't mean just anyone, but someone who has over 20 years of aviary experience... the turkeys had gotten wet, they stuck them out and in a tank that the heat lamp wasn't working properly in, I know because I stuck my hand on the lamp, that isn't supposed to happen... so instead of being humane, she just scooped them up, threw them in a box and stomped off to the back... the other "expert" has vet knowledge, but in equine and bovine... now I will say that is a plus but ask any vet how different aviary is from that and you will quickly learn that is why we don't have a lot of aviary vets... these people refuse to keep the birds from being handled and so you have every single person who adores these little fluffy babies in there handling and carrying them around which causes added stress from their already stress filled first week of life but can also cause them to die... look up the what happens to birds when they get over stressed... it is usually a number one cause of death for them... I am just curious at what avenue a person can go down to get these stores to hire outside help during Chick days, someone of knowledge, to assist in care and education... otherwise I want to take this to a level of shutting them down from carrying live animals altogether.... maybe that should be my next adventure??? Open a baby chicks business and take them out of feed stores period.... WHAT IS EVERYONE'S THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS????
