Had to help a heifer have a calf this morning. A whole lot of emotions go through you when a cow is struggling to have a calf. Fear that if we don't get the calf out it will die. Adrenaline as you pull on the front legs of the calf assisting the cow. Exhaustion as you pull with everything you have and the calf gets stuck in the birth canal. And finally, joy, as you get the calf out and it let's out a bawl telling you "hello world here I am." It's a great day when you get to help bring a life into the world. This is why we love what we do!
They are not real happy about being separated from their mommas. #weaningclaves
This poor little bull calf has had a rough start to his life, he was orphaned by his momma. We are hoping that another cow with a newborn and plenty of milk will serve as a surrogate to him. Odds are he will end up a bottle calf, and he will need a name...any suggestions?
